Well, it's taken a bit longer than I had planned, but today the ol' gal fired up again, with her new Electromotive XDI system installed, and Gustafson high torque starter installed. The new starter turns the engine over really well. Absolutely great upgrade or replacement.

The XDI seems to be working great. We installed it as part of the timing belt service and cam timing project. The car cranked over and it fired right up. But I can't say it is running perfectly. The idle was a bit lumpy and when we ran the revs up, it reached 5K rpms and stopped running up, almost like hitting a rev limiter, but obviously that wasn't it. Checking the timing, it showed a bit uneven. But looks like 14 deg. at 1K, 28 deg at 2K, 39 deg at 3K and levels off. Does that sound right? We found that two of the plug wires were not firing, so we checked them and reconnected, and they fired up fine.

So, questions -- what timing set-up do you find works best with the XDI? Any tips on set-up issues? What could cause it to "hit the wall" at 5000 rpms?

    Thanks,
    Steve

I think 36 is the majic number for 2V timing, 39 seems like too much to me. Also I think 10 might be a better number at 1000 and 20-25 at 2000...I'd pull it back 3-4 degrees across the board and see what you get.

The hit a wall thing, mine did that when I was having crank trigger problems, that was haltech though so myabe not relevent.

    The starter is manufactured by:

Gustafson does not generally sell retail. Rather, they sell through distributors. Since the 308 starter is a new item for them, you should contact Keith Gustafson and he will be able to tell you who is distributing it for him. He told me today that he will be updating his website soon, and the info should be there as well. I've used his starters in the past on several old Jaguars and I can vouch for the fact that they are an excellent, very high quality product. NAYYY, just a very happy customer.

Well, I think we discovered one of the problems. Paul was reading the manual for the Electromotive, and it warned to be sure to separate the wires. We had used one of the old wire looms on either side, packing the wires together. The system is so high energy it can create "cross-talk" between the wires. Once we removed the wire holders and separated the wires, the car smoothed right out. Took it out on the road and it ran strong right up to 7000 rpms, nice and smooth, no burping or back-firing like I used to have when lifting on the gas. Can't wait to balance the carbs and see how much better she runs. The XDI system from Nick's Forza definitely rules!!
