The (one and only) '0846' Debate Thread

NOTE:

On October 23, 2002, in his 9th FerrariChat post, Jim Glickenhaus ("Napolis") casually dropped the following comment:

When questioned about the identity of his 1967 330 P4, Glickenhaus responded:

This is 0846. It was a P3 that was converted by Ferrari into the first P4. It has a long history including winning Daytona in 1967. It was raced as both a coupe and a spyder. At LeMans in 1967 it developed a flat tire. Amon tried to fix it with the trusty Ferrari hammer but the head came off. He tried to drive back to the pits but the wheel caught on fire and the car burned. David Piper aquired the remains and many P4 spares from Enzo Ferrari and built this car which he and others including John Surtees raced for many years. I acquired the car from David when I met him at the Goodwood festival of Speed in 2000.
That response sparked a debate over whether the 330 P4 replica project Glickenhaus had purchased from David Piper actually contained the remains of Ferrari 330 P3/4 0846. Threads on the topic began popping up regularly. Unfortunately, the debate wasn't confined to these threads, nor was it even confined to the Vintage Ferrari forum. Instead, it rapidly spread to unrelated threads and other F-Chat discussion forums like a cancer, ruining the F-Chat experience for other users. In response to numerous complaints, on August 5, 2005, several of the existing discussions on the Glickenhaus car were merged to form this thread, creating a place where the debate could be contained, yet remain open for discussion among those who were interested.

For some time, the first post appearing in this thread was the November 11, 2003 post below, leaving newer users with the false impression that the thread was created by Glickenhaus himself. This back-dated post is being inserted into the thread on January 31, 2017 for clarification going forward.

Note the roof exit vents. They were present only on the P4. No original P4 coupe exists so we had to go from blueprints and photo's.

Just that. Go out to Indy where John's shop is. (The person who fit the body), make sure we're happy, load her into an enclosed trailer and tow her home.

Son't forget to put a "Do Not Disturb" sign on the trailer's lock before the journey begins.
Don't forget to put a "Lobster" bib on DES's neck - better make it a double - all that drool...

The main reaction one has, when seeing this car in person, is amazement as to how small it is and how big the balls of those who drove her at speed at SPA in the rain were.

Jim, I realize that us in the peanut gallery can't vote (after all, it is your car), but it has occurred to me that this restoration would make a great art exhibit. You could have a series of rooms. The first room could have life sized pictures of the car as you found it. Each successive room would then have life sized pictures of the destruction and recreation process ending, of course, with the final product.

Don't get me wrong. You sound like the kinda guy who will take this car out on track. However, odds are good that this may be near the last time that someone is willing to do what you have done. It takes a very special person to be willing to pour the time and money into a project like this. Thus, a documentary of your trials and tribulations will enable countless old farts to say to the their kids, "See, this is how they used to do it!" Great job.

Dale

I hear you, Dale. One of the great things about Jim is that he is creating a living record of his restoration here on F-Chat. Since Rob plans to keep the archives forever, future generations will have the benefit of Jim's posts here.
