This reminds me of here. We have US1 from Jax to St,. Augustine, where they line up Friday/ Saturday nights (11:30 on). Same type of road (2 lanes each w/ median), but not as many lights. I quit driving it at those times because between 3 and 7 weeks ago, I have almost been hit each weekend. 5 in a row. I called the cops on the first incident.

EDIT:::WHOOPS wrong section. I can't delete it. Mod, please move. Thank you.

    Im a bit confused...

It was illegal street racing and there were adults bringing their children to watch ?

I dont know how big street racing is for you guys out there but its very big in some areas. The street for some people is their track, its very organized, and usally very low risk not in this case. So it would basically be the same as taking your child to the track to watch races. Its a lifestyle and the people you race with become like family after a while.

Theres two types of street racing IMO, one like you described and actual organized racing. Organized street racing is usally done in a industrial park where the road is prepped, so if a racer goes out of control he is not at risk of hurting anyone except himself. This is a known risk and the gladely except that. If its on the highway they usally race at night to avoid traffic and cops.

Heres a quick video to show you real street racing.

Unfortunately, its someone that wasn't street racing that now has to face the fact of having accidentally killed so many. If only the bystanders had of stayed back from the road, it sounds to me like they where on the road, never saw him, he didn't see them. Tragic.

Racing is dangerous no matter the location, and something many forget - so is spectating.

That is not true. Go to this thread in the Silver Section. The racers left a plume of smoke from their burnouts and visibility was lost.

This doesnt make sense. Ive been drag racing more then once the tires smoke quickly rises and rarely ever goes back behind a crowd unless a strong wind which would only make it disperse quicker. Usally people do not stand behind the cars till after they launch so smoke would be basically cleared. So the chances of the smoke being behind the crowd and not being see through to headlights is hard to belief.

Lights on or not, get F#$% out of the street. If people are dumb enough to take the risk of getting hit standing on a highway, well....

We don't know for sure whether they really where off or not. There are accounts that support it. I'd hate to think it was an intentional act just for such headlines. "7 dead in drag race" - when someone not even racing did the killing. I know someone in my neighborhood that if you tried to street race - he'd not hesitate to kill you. Heck, he's threatened a Fed Ex driver with death for driving a blazing 25MPH down a dirt road driveway next to his house. I've seen him swerve into the oncoming lane in marked passing zones so someone couldn't get by.

As for the smoke, it would really depend on how much they where spinning their tires, a good launch and he'd of still been able to see. I was recently behind a trailer that had a wheel lock, and I could still navigate through the tire smoke.

Sad no matter how you look at it. So many people are killed or injured for life in automobile related incidents. I still remember watching an engine block kill a spectator at a F3 race in Britain some years ago. Track isn't safe, roads aren't safe, but we'll be out there anyway because humans aren't meant to live their lives in little shells. We bleed, are hurt, and die, and we better use what time we have in a worthwhile way. Even if we do stay away from things "dangerous" - we will still die.

I based the thread title on the report I linked. 2 cars racing and a third without headlights coming upon them fast. Videotaping it? Playing cop? More info has come out, including from an officer and board member, who was there. (link I referenced in above post.) Also...... http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=186105
