Be careful, there are many examples of poorly stamped numbers which are correct. They were not very careful at lining them up and sometimes hit them too hard, denting the plate underneath at the factory. I think the roughest are on early E-series (that I've seen), the early cars looked to be stamped cleaner in general. I'm sure there are counter examples...
I think you'd need to inspect in person to make any determination, hard to do from a photo except the wrong font.

It was not my intent to cast aspersions on that particular car, I know absolutely nothing about it, it just brought this to mind. I have no idea if upon seeing it in person, I could determine one way or the other. With numbers on my present car and its predecessor and, most of the ones I have seen in person, being, lets say, normal, It gives me a jolt every time one pops up with something different it makes me ask why. My first Dino was stolen. I can just picture the rest.

After all this time, can we say with certainty they left the factory like that, Luigi was heavy handed but Mario was more careful. really!?

    You say wrong font?
what are we saying, Luigi was not only heavy handed, he had too much wine for lunch and used the wrong dye set?

Don't know, if its nothing its nothing...just bothers me that's all.

I wasn't referencing the car either, my comments are general with regards to fonts etc. Comparing cars with similar S/N should give some clue.
Sorry you had a Dino stolen, which serial# was it?

However, I do believe there were some enthusiastic or heavy handed body number stampers employed there :)

You seem to be focusing on this BLACK early Dino recently. See your threads and postings -

    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/206-246/406018-black-good-color-dino.html

Are you thinking of buying it?

I have owned several black cars, have seen several black Dinos, and have friends who own other black Ferraris, and other than showing dirt and door nicks a little easier than other colors, they look very striking when cared for. If I were in the market for another 246gt, I'd certainly consider this one. From what I understand, the people with the car now hope to get the engine number and hidden body numbers tracked down shortly. Personally, from what I have seen so far, I don't think that there is much of a provenance problem with this car at all. After you have looked at several Dinos, you will realize that number stampings were done in inconsistent ways.

no I am not thinking of buying it.
I guess the black thing came up because others have been posting about original colors for their cars. I always felt a little guilty about changing it because it had a personality and I drove it to many adventures when black. Now its a different color and feels like a different car. So maybe I miss the black one.

Look at how Luigi Lambrusco botched the stamping of my left trunk hinge,
got the first number rotated 90 degrees and then had no where to go, so stamped it over.

Suspicious, for sure. "Your" Dino was obviously stolen from my father's garage in 1976, just after he moved the Pinto into it and moved our factory 67 Cougar (Oct 1966 build) with the HiPo 289 (4bbl, solid lifters) out. I'm calling the cops, RIGHT NOW.

Can you hear the sirens in the distance? They'll be there shortly . . . .

scott, that should add $10,000 or so to the value of your car - just like when the US mint goofs on a nickel.
