I have a 2006 F430 F1 with 17k miles. I have an odd problem that only manifests itself after I've driven the car for about an hour. Instead of the usual 150ms shift time, it takes about 1500ms to shift into 5th or 6th gear. Today the car actually refused to go into 6th. After restarting the car, 6th engaged, but still slowly. Once the car sits for a few hours, the problem vanishes.

I know it's not the clutch because it was just checked to have 75% life left, plus if the clutch were gone all the gears would have some trouble.

It's difficult to get treated by a mechanic because it doesn't happen every time I drive the car, but rather only after driving for quite awhile. The car was recently serviced and fluids were checked.

I searched the forum and discovered some people discussing something similar in a 6 speed manual, and they replaced plastic bushings. It's possible that is necessary for me, but I have my doubts since I have an F1 transmission. That thread is: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/360-430/347883-360-manual-6th-gear-difficulty.html

Has anyone with an F1 encountered this problem? What did you do? Thank you very much.

Some 430's had loose bleed screws on the F1 actuator. Air will get sucked into the shift lines and expand when it gets hot causing all kinds of shifting issue. Almost impossible to diagnose due to a lack of or incorrect error codes. But in seems to make sense: long drive, heat builds up, air expands when it gets hot...

My friend had one in his shop a few months ago. 1-2 was fine, 3-4 would start to fail after driving for a while.

The actuator must be pulled off of the transmission to bleed and tighten up the screws. SD2 or Leonardo is used but I understand not required. Someone on this board has mentioned bleeding the F1 system without an SD.

while you have an F1, i have a stick 360, I have an issue that when in high speed, it is very difficult to shift from 5th to 6th , i have to release the clutch and then engage it again to do just that.. any thought on my problem?

Stout: That makes perfect sense. I think there's a high probability you are correct. I'll have the actuator looked at during my next service. I'm guessing it's not the type of problem that's urgent and will cause a bigger problem since we're just talking about some excess air in the system. Thank you for your reply.

tian2bing: Based on my reading, I think you need to replace your shift bushings. Read this thread for details: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/360-430/347883-360-manual-6th-gear-difficulty.html

Latest F1 maintenance recommendation (on the 599, last dry plate F1 system) is to change F1 fluid every three years, which requires a thorough bleeding using an SD3 (or Leonardo) on the F430. Took Ferrari a while to figure this out, so there is no recommendation on most earlier Ferraris.

I asked my service adviser and he said that it was only changed when the clutch is serviced hmm!! I checked the service record when my clutch was replaced and didn't see any mention of F1 fluid being used. Do they not have to open up the hydraulic system when doing a clutch change? So I guess mine was never changed as it was never mentioned on any of the service history and I think I have them all. Should I be thinking of taking it in?

Having the clutch replaced on the F430 that I just bought and when I asked about this they told me that they had to open up the hydraulic system and therefore would be changing the hydraulic system.

My car was fixed. Stout, it was exactly what you said it would be: the loose screw on the actuator. Thanks.

Alan- If they changed your clutch, they had to at least bleed the F1 system, since F1 fluid drives the throw-out bearing. I would guess they changed the fluid when they did that. There should be a charge under fluids unless they just quoted a price for the whole job.
