My assumption was that he had the car inspected, since he claimed it to be a "98 point car." PPI is always a must.

Trying to buy one is like trying to sell one, its impossible to get a number that everyone agrees on. Im going to sell mine in the spring and I honestly don't know the real number

Whew! That was an odyssey... I'm surprised that Roy has the car listed as low as he has in light of the astonishing auction result of the beautifully restored green LP400 S3. In order to reproduce a car like this for that sort of money, you would first need to find a "good" car for around $300K. (sorry, getting a decent carb'd car -any variant- at that level is a pipe dream...maybe you could find something that has been crashed and poorly repaired or flooded or burned; but that is not an ideal starting point) Then you should be prepared to spend $200K+ around one year (this is from the time the project actually begins. Most good restorers are booked for the next 1-2 years) to restore and sort out what most sellers consider a "good example".

This car still wearing the fabled P7 tyres. If you intend to drive her, new set will be required, as I imagine these are somewhat old now. But great if you intend to show the car.

Agreed. This car just needs to wait for the right owner. It has a great provenance and its condition cannot be replicated at its ask price.

Has the value of the 1989 countach gone up or down in the past 6 months? What do you think the value will be in 3 years from now... higher or lower?

Why are they telling you to move on? Just curious.
What do YOU want to do.

Every time one suggests to me to sell on of my Lamborghinis, the following year the value has crept up. In my Countach ownership there was always creeping up values and one boom early on, then one big boom. Just my experience.

If the lack of opportunity is there because of keeping the Countach, then do what's best for you.

Like the saying goes, if I had a dollar for evey time someone told me to "just sell it"......

I really don't want to sell it, I was just curious what most people think, I usually like hearing from someone that doesn't have the car, because if they have one USUALLY of course the value is going higher...lol I think the car value will only go up as long as the world doesn't have some type of crazy war or economic disaster.... I am mad at myself for not buying a 1984 countach I was thinking about buying 10 years ago....

  12. Obviously you have to do what is right for you. First consider a realistic price, then figure out what your true tax bill will be, before you get excited. The world will have another disaster. When? What impact? Who knows? One of the greatest skills to ever acquire is a simple one on paper. Knowing when to leave the party. If you fret over values and watch it like a bad stock, you need to sell. Don't worry about future appreciation, it comes with expenses like maintenance & insurance, and possibly higher future tax consequences. If you decide to keep, don't get caught up in the $$ part of it. Take a deep breath & enjoy the car. Drive it. Maybe you'll win, maybe you'll lose, but you will never be hear again. (lol)

Myself, I'm still that kid in college with the poster on the wall. I planned on losing money when I bought mine, so ultimately I got it right either way. :)

Agreed if it holds you up,prevents you from doing things you would want to do,you should sell, if on the other hand ,this is not an issue, keep the car, Most cars this time around are owned by enthusiasts and collectors, as opposed to the late 80s when they where bought 100grand over sticker by mostly show offs and have to have,s remember there is 2000cars floating around somwhere out there, telling us whoever owns these cars are very happy to hold on, the 20-30cars for sale is not a big part of the Countach world, MHO all good

I think the collector car market peaked last year. I think the values fell back slightly and are in a hold for now. If the economy stays strong the collector car market as a whole will begin to slowly appreciate once again. When? Who knows. With the rapid price increases over the past two years, I think you lost quite a few potential buyers. They are just out at these prices. Should you sell....just depends on your own situation, wants, and desires

note that the values have stalled with the rate rising talk. So follow the rate hikes and your answer wont be very far, unless it is coincidence?
At this point I dont think anyone expects to see Countach pre-anniv below $300K in the least rosy scenario pending worldwide disaster and if so, the countach values will be the least of one's problems.

    Quick question to those 'in-the-know.'

Generally speaking, are the 80-90s 'supercars' (incl. Countach, 288gto, f40, f50, 959, etc, etc) in fact being purchased and collected now, mostly by those who had posters of them on their bedroom walls (basically Gen-Xers) or is that merely speculation in an attempt to explain the relatively recent explosive appreciation?

I am of that generation (41) and had most every car of that era on my wall. I would say it also includes the supercars of the 70s.

To clarify my question. I'm asking are the gen Xers a high proportion of the buyers/collectors of these cars now, or do they only represent a small percentage. EarlyCat is on the right path with his Countach/age poll. I'm curious about the group of 80s-90s supercars as a whole.

I slightly misunderstood your question previously. I'd say more Gen Xers than before, as expected, about a third of my specific Private Treaty market
