How to get rid of Check Engine Light for Cats on 360?

Based on advice from this forum, I replaced the headers on my Ferrari away from the ones with the built in cats. I then put in beefier rear cats so I have legal cats and life is supposed to be good.

Problem is, the check engine light kicks on after about 100 miles, for Right AND Left bank.

I took it to a different, more reputable ferrari specialist shop highly recommended by others and had them inspect the exhaust too. That shop also insists the check engine lights are simply because of the exhaust.

My problem is I refuse to drive around a Ferrari with Check Engine lights on. First off, I can never sell it. Secondly, I don't feel safe so I cannot enjoy the car. Every time it comes on, I don't know if the light is really because of the exhaust or a bigger problem, so every 100 miles I have to pull over- pull out my code reader- and clear the codes.

It really stinks. I'm about 3 seconds from putting the original headers back on.

Since this is clearly a "normal" thing to do because the headers are problemmatic, does everyone else just drive around with the CEL on the whole time? Does anyone have any advice on how to kill the CEL? Something I can do with a tuner or resistor or something?

What is the actual code? Is it delayed response or inefficiency?

 

get a code scanner - OBD II.... can get them cheap <$30 and they read to your Iphone.
You might need some of those little cat convertor pipes and screw the 1st set of O2 sensors to these.
I have a spare set I'm not using now. I bought them when I was going to install a/m headers, but changed my mind.

the challenge with am headers (w/ no cats) on our cars is that from my research it appears each car behaves a little different...... some get away with am headers and no CEL.... some then add the bigdaddies simulators.... and no CEL.... and some have no answer to the CEL..... which will utlimately require you:
1) get a custom tune..... or 2) drive around with the CEL.... or 3) reinstall stock cat/mani's...... OR some people resort to pulling the bulb for the CEL.... which is dumb.

the big daddies website shows this fixes P0420/P0430 codes. These don't exist on the list of codes I have for 360's. Maybe they relate to the P0422/P0432 codes? (Main Catalyst Efficiency/Main Catalyst Efficiency (Bank 2) codes???

I'm getting P1126 (Long term Fuel Trim Additive Air (Bank 2) codes on mine which my mechanic says is due to the Tubi exhaust I have. Do you know if this is also a post-cat O2 sensor issue? I'd love to get rid of my CEL that comes up after about 150Km's.....

 

That sounds like a long term fuel trim out of range issue.
If your mods changed the afr and in turn require a fuel trim which is outside of the range of the stock tune, then you can get a CEL.

In my mercedes days... we would reset our adaptations, and drive around under different conditions for the maps to be set with new adaptations.
Sometimes this would adjust for new parts if they are not too radical, and if the tune will allow for this variance.

I would reset the CEL, and drive around for a few days and see if/when it comes back.

If it comes back, I would check a few things:
1. Any ex leaks after install?
other items will require special tools.....
2. check fuel pressure, etc..... per chart.

On the mercs a bad mass air meter would throw all sorts of other codes..... but I'm not going to spec on your dime with this platform.

P0422, P0432, which I believe are efficiency codes for both bank 1 and bank 2!

 

I have a code scanner... and in fact I mention using it every time the code goes off...

I have P0422, P0432... anyone know if those big daddies things will help with these codes? I know it says it helps with P0420 and P0430...

A custom tune is always an option, but of course I prefer not to for more reasons than just the hassle. Definitely don'e like the options of driving around with the CEL or pulling the bulb...

Any insights anyone has on these helping the codes would be appreciated... I'll give them a shot if they might help!

 

There are literally100 threads on this. Most never get adequate resolution of the issue. At least not one that passes smog. He big daddy solution didn’t work that often, caused some cracking, and won’t pass smog in CA.

Skid - is this the dirty little secret aftermarket header co's don't tell you when ordering these products? Sounds pretty hit and miss on success.

Done the reset and drive it, and CEL back on with same code. It's going in for a major in a couple of weeks so will get all those other things checked while it's there. Really don't want to have to do a custom tune. The Tubi has been on for some time (before I bought it) and the previous owner told me abut it, but said it happened if you started it and let it warm up in an enclosed space (garage).

 

I would not panic...... stock ex manifolds and cats can be found used...... if needed.
I presume the low prod vol is why we have so little tuning support for this platform......
just about every LSX car around here is running dirty.... long tubes, no cats, and am exhaust... and NO CEL..... all tuned out by your local speed shop

I'm sitting on a CS muffler...... hopefully I can install that this fall with no CEL......

 

I wonder if they just used the extension piece or the better one that has the integrated mini cat. I'm so more research. I had never heard of these before.

 

Not a secret but yes. Aftermarket headers are for off-road use and won’t pass smog. They will tell you off road use but leave the details out. Can you tune it out, yes but the car won’t ever be smog legal so that makes it hard to sell. FYI: hanging the muffler has nothing to do with smog systems so can not fix a cel.

It's frustrating. You'd think tough, if 25% of all Ferrari owners install a similar exhaust, I feel like there would be some standardized solutions .. I'm thoroughly surprised there isn't.

 

Not sure if that's true. The Ferrari is a 300 cell system, 200+100. I worked with my shop to replace it with a single 300 cell which would have the same impact on emissions, would it not?

 

My aftermarket headers DO pass smog in CA
Just install mini cats 02 extenders (fabspeed or big daddies) that will get rid of the 421/431 CEL in most cases.

In my understanding it’s more the difference across the cat, so you may have actually made it more likely to CEL by doing the 300 cell cat.

I’ve heard that catless headers + sport cats sometimes works on it’s own, but other people have to relocate the sensors as well. Of course just buying new catful header timebombs is the only 100% CA smog legal solution.

I'm currently away in Italy so experimentation/further development has stalled a bit for a few weeks but I'm VERY close to being able to resolve the issues of cat related efficiency on the 360.

I've already been able to identify the settings required to do a complete catalyzer CEL delete (which entirely disables cat monitoring) but I'm also looking at a way to keep catalyzer monitoring emissions friendly and still not throw a CEL. I've also been able to identify the settings for cat temp monitoring so you can turn them off too entirely and remove the cat sensor/conversion block probes and simply plug in a bung. No more slow down lights ever...

These will be part of my Ferrari 360 'Swiss Army Knife' software coming soon with which you can also enable/disable immobilizer, swap MAF's to larger ones, swap to CS or custom maps, adjust throttle pedal sensitivity, etc. This isn't a re-tune, you can retain your existing fuel maps (or swap to CS factory maps which are very safe too) its reflash of the ignition ecu's so watch this space.

There is a lot of talk about Smog in CA... It is a legitimate issue for those who live there, but personally I am not concerned about CA Smog.

I'm never going to live in CA, never going to visit CA with my car, and we don't have smog I just want to CEL gone.

How about you get this out sooner than later haha. Ping me if you need any bring-to-market help, as I got my start in Jeep accessory systems before getting into airline security software.

What you are describing though sounds like just what GearBoxZ makes for the Diesels. Its a great "tuner" in that it doesn't try to do reprogramming, but rather it simply affordably shuts off the CELs generated from the DPF and Cat removals on Diesel Trucks:

Don't try to overengineer your solution though... sounds like you've already identified enough to offer significant value- after that your just having fun

Dumb Question of the Day!

If I am going to try one of these 02 adapters, because it seems like the best bet as of now...

How many do I need? haha.

There looks like there are SIX 02 sensors. How many of these, and which of these, should be changed?

Now on generic sites it says it should be the most downstream 02 sensor, but my logic suggests that the readings on this sensor should not have changed much on my setup. The Middle two are the ones who should see the biggest changes.

 

Oh goodie, another cat CEL thread.

My story is pretty ironic. No CEL when I bought the car, and it had the original headers and cats running into a Tubi. Problem was, the pre-cats in the headers were toast - did I mention no CEL? - so I replaced the headers and cats with stock units that had low miles and were perfectly fine, and I replaced the Tubi with an OEM valved CS exhaust. That's when I got the CEL that wouldn't clear. Turned out PART of the problem was a loose pin in a connector. So no CEL for a few hundred miles, then it came back. I'm not scheduled to take it to the shop until November, so I'm just ignoring it for now.

There is no, "this will always work" solution.

 

Your car has six o2 sensors? I am having a similar problem in a 430 and picked up a set of big daddy's. They go on the rear o2's to try and remove them from the stream a bit. You only need two.

 

Ok so CA requires all monitors set AND that you pass a visual inspection to have OEM equipment. How did you pass the visual? Note: I paid a shady garage isn’t a valid approach.
