308 GT4 Build Numbers

I have another picture of that somewhere taken from the rear.

Which book is that from?

 

But 130 GT4's in 1975 surprises me because it just seems that the 1975's are quite common

Hi Chris,

I'm surprised by your build number. My 1974 GT4 is chassis #9054 with build #400, so it seems odd to me that a later car has an earlier build number by some margin.

Assembly number was on both headlight frames - I can look for another away from the front end just in case it was repaired but no sign of any major damage?

 

Could it possibly be 501 rather than 105 i.e. upside down?

Like I wrote above, there were at least four different sequences of assembly numbers commencing at "1" for the 308 GTB:

"standard Euro" version, LHD (dry sump engine).
"standard Euro" version, RHD (= UK) (dry sump engine).
"american market" version, LHD (wet sump engine).
"australian market" version, RHD (wet sump engine).

Each of the four series started with a "01" assembly number.
Furthermore, for certain models, if a important change happened during production, the assembly number sequence MIGHT (?) have been brought back and re-started at "1" again.

Only the collection of the greatest sample of assembly numbers, with the market version of each car, might help to build a better picture.

Hi,

Is someone aware of a way to part the US specs from the others ?

I don't know if "US specs" is really what I mean. I'm rather thinking lower power output and rectangular blink repeaters, larger bumpers, etc.
I suspect Australia would have the EU lights and bumper but the 230hp output ?

I'd like to know, from the RHD and the LHD, how many were EU specs from both the looks and the engine output.
I would believe someone in EU would refuse to buy US looks, and would refuse to buy lower output.

Hence the search for :

# series 1 EU specs outside & in LHD
# series 1 EU specs outside & in RHD
# series 2 EU specs outside & in LHD
# series 2 EU specs outside & in RHD

AFAIK no Gt4s were dry sump originally.

Oh, no, that was me pasting a 308GTB related post from earlier, just to illustrate the kind of sorting I was thinking of.

BTW, I spent some time on the GT4 registry (a link to it was given here, in the first posts).
It's a nightmare because the registry relates mostly where the cars are now, not where they were first destined. And many are still unknown, with even some chassis numbers suspected to be 246GTS in fact.

Another, main issue in my view, is that there is no data on whether there are series 1 or 2.

I've got teh door cards off mine at the moment to change replace the window felts. 1539 on masking tape on both cards. Chassis no 14302 built(I believe) in Oct 78

 

Also check carefully the lip at the bottom that the door cards screw to. There is a number stamped there also

 

I made an error. Couldn't remember the number for 2 minutes while moving between the cards and the computer!. It is 1656. I will check the number on the lip when I reinstall the cards tomorrow.

 

On mine there is a very long downward diagonal stroke from the top left of the one as in normal in Italy. Almost looks like a seven though that would then probably have a stroked horizontally across the 7.

My intuitive position is as follows:
Serial Numbers (S/N) were only even numbers... so from 10000 to 10100 there were 50 cars built.
Chassis numbers are both odd and even... so if built in sequence, the S/N number would jump 2 for every +1 in chassis number. Scaglietti would get an order for say 200 chassis and deliver them in groups. They would stamp them accordingly on all the bits so if unassembled / reassembled they knew which bits went with each other (since hand built may not fit properly otherwise).
As cars were built they were assigned a S/N specifics to the specs for that build. A chassis was rolled in from the stack of waiting chassis delivered from Scaglietti (without attention to the numerical sequence)
Engines were pulled from their own assembly line of engines.
From initial indications, it appears chassis numbers are close in sequence but potentially in blocks as discussed earlier - i.e. grab 20 chassis at a time, usage not in sequence. While engines mostly appear to be in sequence off the assembly line.
Likely UK/RHD cars had different chassis numbers - probably 400s in the first order from Scaglietti. As more cars were built, LHD/RHD would still have uniquely different numbers.

On the door card mounting lip correct?

 

Written on the main mounting panel inside the door, if you call that the lip. In big numbers, maybe 8 cm high. Matched the number on the masking tape on the door card. Should have taken a pic but didn't. Doesn't over worry me, just trying to add to the thread.
