Well, okay... Let's try this again. This time it's in "my" garage and not at a shop; so I have no excuses! It's been sitting, duct-taped-up in my driveway for about 2yrs. Last Tuesday I got it moved inside. Today I spent about 4 hours using turpentine to removed all of the glue. It's rougher than it looks - I'll post pics. And needs more bodywork than I expected. But the engine and gearbox are good. I've completed the rebuild of 1 carb and have another 1/2-way done and then 2-more to go. I doubt it will be done by this Summer - but, I'm hopeful! 6hrs later (over 2-days) and all of the duct-tape residue is gone. Whew! Every corner has issues, but most are not that bad. Luckily the doors have already been re-done and look very good. I've never done body work on a car before, but I'm willing to give it a go. Here is a picture of the car and then pictures of all of the areas that need some attention. more... Please keep in mind that this is 44 years of wear & tear.. The last three pictures are of the trunk lid, which blew-off the car in large wind we had 2yrs ago. I came out in the morning and it was laying on the sidewalk. Initially I thought someone had broken into the trunk (full of parts) to steal something. But, no; everything was there. I think this might be one of the more difficult things to get right, since I have to work with the metal. The rest, I can simply re-strip and try-again, if I don't get it perfect. I'll be glad to re-do the passenger side nose too, as this was one of the areas that didn't look right to me when I bought it. I hope to get a nice straight line to match the other side. Same goes with the passenger side mirror area. This was a spot where you could see that it had been repainted. I suspect both of these areas were originally repaired together.The quality of work seems the same in both areas. Ah.... The joys of Ferrari Ownership! I've yet to restore a Ferrari, but I've done plenty of work on Porsches. My only piece of advice diving in would be to tackle small jobs one at a time. We've seen so many people try to do too much at once only to get frustrated and walk away, sometimes for good. You've got a great start on an ambitious job, stick with it and you'll have another beauty in the garage. Congrats!
Thank you for the good advice and encouragement. I had thought to start with the smaller areas for two reasons: first, I'm new to this and wanted to experiment on something small to start and secondly, I'm a firm believer in gaining as many small successes first, to build the confidence to tackle the larger jobs later on.
No. it was primed before--and still is--but just the body and doors. none of the lids were primed. Although, engine and trunk lids were sanded flat. The front lid wasn't primed, though some filler had been added, though I can't (now) tell what for. I have a bunch of pictures taken (by the shop), when it was taken down to bare metal, so I'm going to use those as a guide to what's really underneath. The passenger-side mirror area is a good example of that. I'll post those old pictures, where applicable, as I work on each area. Thank you for your question. It gave me a good opportunity to explain a little about how I plan to tackle this project.
I made patch panels for mine and installed a NOS original quarterpanel on mine. By my self. The body shop was impressed somehow
