Gentlemen What can I say, the follows/guides/shoes where the wrong way round!!! My only defence is that this is the only 348 in the country and there are no ferrari workshops. Rookie mistake!! Thanks for the pictures and guidance. Now waiting for a new belt and pulleys to put it back together. Will keep you posted. Thanks again.
To be honest not sure. It could be that the belt rubbing against the followers/guides/shoes shaved so much material off that it loosened the belt? However I've also ordered a new tensioner spring and restraining pin just in case.
Sorry Im late to the party. I sold that car a few years ago but decided it was just the timing belt noise after meeting with another F-chat member and listening to his car. The car I now own did not have that same sound but after just doing my belt service it does have a slight whine . It is that of a new belt and yes I made sure to tension the timing belt correctly. My previous car which I started this thread had the belt service done about a year before I purchased it with very few miles put on it after so I assume it was also just new belt tension and should go away after it sets in. The video posted here was of a high pitch and neither of my cars ever had such a sound. That to me sounds like a transmission noise such as a automatic transmission low on fluid ect.... My noise was a lower pitch sound but a whine none the less which I say is a belt noise. So in conclusion if you just had your major done and now notice a noise it is probably just your new belt as they are tight to install even with the tension off of them. Also you should have upgraded to the hill lower timing bearing as well as change the rear lower timing pulley bearing. My rear bearing has been changed 2 times now as the first one failed and messed up a few components. Ferrari did the first belt service but neglected to change the bearing as the bulletin says to do. 5k miles later it failed but that was in year 2000. Now 38K miles later the upgraded bearing fell apart when I just changed my belt. I would consider the lower timing bearings to be part of every major service at this point. Good luck. also I have a Facebook page, Ferrari 348 maintenance if you care to look you will see pics. Thank you
2 things there bearing related if you have a 348, most people know but here it is : 1)You need you pull the timing chain and check the oil pump bearing as it is called since the factory had a roller bearing in there. The TSB updates it to a ball bearing. I had mine pulled and it fell apart. 2) The timing cover lower bearing is failure prone mine did not fail but the seal was leaking. Hill Eng makes an updated one for that. Both of those needs to be updated or should be updated. Items 11 and 3 are circled below on the left hand side. this was some of my service items where I outlined all the parts to replace/update. Image Unavailable, Please Login
VBTURBO2 thank you for your detailed response. My timing chain bearings were leaking oil so I had them replaced, not sure if it was hills upgraded bearing as I ordered the parts from Eurospares UK. At this time I changed the timing belt too. Since I then noticed the whine I have changed both timing belt pulleys that come as part of the timing belt change kit and another new timing belt. However the whine is still present. I'll try and post a link to video of the noise from within the car.
Its worth mentioning that apparently when belts are new they are tight and they do wine a bit until they settle, or so I have read. I assumed most people have louder exhausts and don't hear it anymore perhaps.
Is that the same sound as it made before? Does not mean im right but it sounds like belt wine to me which new or big belts tend do. If you check the other links where others have asked they decided it was normal with new belts.
Timing shoes touching the belts will cause this noise, the teeth of the gears cause small raised areas in the belt where the teeth are, when the shoes are too tight it will whirr as the show grinds off the belt high spots and increase and decrease frequency with rpm. Eventually it will stop which is I suspect why some say belts make noise after a major then stop when they stretch or what not, Its what I learned out here. Nope its outside wear due to improper shoe clearance, belts do not make noise. You can adjust them with the engine in the car in about an hour. https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/how-to-inspect-timing-belt-shoe.623440/
Yep, agree with this, as my car was doing it before I changed the belts, when I checked those shoes on mine they were rubbing before the belt change. Properly adjusted and new belt (as well as the rest of the major) and noise gone.
