Vintage Ferrari Tool Kits And Accessories

Does anyone know when Ferrari began the practice of including tool kits and other accessories (such as manuals, emergency lights, etc.) with their cars? Is there a known model when this began happening? All the way back with the 166 Inter, or maybe the 250’s? It would be great to see any photos people have. I find these details very interesting. Thank you.

 

Good question.

I think that all road 250s (odd serial number cars) got a tool kit.

But I don’t know which was the very first to do so.

Dyke, Shaughnessy and Ed Niles might be good sources.

 

I know that, in the mid-1950s the Lampredi-engined competition cars had tool kits in a wooden box (which included the special tool for depressing the mouse-trap valve springs), as well as an early form of a quick-jack.

 

Colombo cars as well.

 

There is a thread on tool kits by Shaughnessy somewhere.

One thing that seems to get forgotten are the hazard warning triangles

The first manual showing tool kits was the spare parts catalog for the 250 Granturismo, published ~1949. This shows both a toolkit for the car along with a wood boxed kit for the engine. This covered the 250 V-12 models before the 250 GTE was introduced.

None of the owner's manuals published earlier have a toolkit in them.

My information comes from Richard Merritt's book of Operating, Maintenance and Service Books which has reprints of 6 early manuals.

In the table of contents, Dick says that this particular manual is for all V-12 models approximately 1954-1959 except for the 410 Superamerica. So the date was not 1949, but 1954, sorry. However, for the GTE manual, he says 1959-1963, but that manual wasn't published until 1961.

It's not unusual to find an unused 365 GTB/4 toolkit, I've had a few over the years. Idiotic pricing IMO.

You really need to see the brand and sizes of each of the wrenches, hallmarks on the oil filter wrenches, etc.

 

Crazy prices, indeed. Then again, if one owns a multi-million dollar car and every detail matters, than it would seem worth the price, particularly if they intend on competing at the finest concours d’Elegance.

 

As prices for the cars drift lower so does the demand for ancillaries and accessories.

The Ferrari tool kit market is a minefield, no question. For some there's fun to be had in searching out and sorting the 'wheat from the chaff'. With help from a few Fchat contributors I put together a briefcase tool kit for a GT4 BB, just like the one in the parts book. It's not perfect but neither is the car a concours winner - so I'm content, for now.
Perhaps when time and resources allow I'll do the same for the 250 GTE, especially if the prediction of falling prices proves accurate.

 

Everything there is reproduction. The plug wrench is too long - it's 1966/67 style.
