458/488 Brake Recall

    Unfortunately, I don’t. Silicone spray is extremely difficult to remove and requires a strong solvent. Maybe brake cleaner solvents suitable for carbon ceramic rotors will work. Silicone bonds tightly on a molecular level, so ordinary detergents don’t work. Because ordinary brake use generates heat, it seems likely that silicone contamination could get baked in, making it even more difficult. The best thing is not to get any on the braking surfaces to begin with, though as you note, you may be stuck with whatever a prior owner did.

    Non chlorinated brake clear should work and not hurt the rotors.

    That stuff in the green can does not clean well and leaves wet residue. This stuff cleans everything and evaporates quickly and completely. I buy 2 or 3 cans at a time. Sometimes on new steel rotors I'll use the house brand brake cleaner and then finish up with the good stuff. Will not hurt plastic either. I should stop posting this because its getting harder to find.

    I use non-chlorinated brake cleaner on gun that need a good scrubbing. It doesn’t hurt plastic of any other finish on the guns. I’ve never had a slimy residue left behind. I used it all the time to clean up my Porsche brakes after a track weekend while I’m washing the car. Again no residue left behind.

    The good stuff many years ago was 1,1,1-Trichloroethane. Was used as an industrial solvent. Excellent when heated and under pressure to remove flux from PC boards during manufacturing. Now banned.

    The cheap stuff at the car parts places stayed wet and needed scrubbing. They started selling the non-chlorinated brake cleaner in a green label as well. I tried a couple cans of it and found that it did not completely evaporate either. You had to wipe it down or blow it off to fully dry it.

    When selecting chemicals of this type spray a bit into the cap and see how fast and complete it evaporates. I do this with silicone spray as well since they keep changing the formulations.

    I just picked up a 488; I wonder of Ferrari will send me a copy of the letter if the previous owner already received one. Anyone know how that works?

    I thought the repair/solution was released, it was just a parts availability issue still at this point?

    I think they figured out what's needed but it will take time (especially in the current supply chain situation) to get enough new parts made and distributed.
    Somebody suggested drilling a hole in the existing cap for now, but I think that would allow the fluid to absorb moisture from the air so I'm not excited about that idea.

    My suggestion to you is to register your car on the Ferrari website ("MyFerrari") - It'll take a few days to have it verified and approved, but once done the site will show the details of your car including pending recalls.

    Does anyone know if the flash that is part of the recall fix will affect a custom ecu tune for aftermarket exhaust?

    You would need to ask your tuner to be sure - There are many ECU modules that can be flashed - I don't think the flash they are doing for the brake recall relates to any type of engine based flash tuning, but I can't say for sure.

    My car is currently at the dealer for the braking issues which they think are related to the recall. We shall see.

    I don't think asking a tuner is a sure thing. They aren't going to get any better answer than anyone else asking them especially if they start out saying they re-flash Ferrari ECUs for profit.

    I just got my first Ferrari ! 2019 488S Bought it from a dealer. They said nothing about a recall on it. I'm curious if it's gonna show up when I register on the website ? I'm gonna do that today
