White 365 Spider California in Naples

You don’t see a 365 Spider California too often.

Today I saw a white one cruising down 5th Avenue around 3:00 in the afternoon.

Does anyone know this car?

I saw this car at Cars on 5th in Naples in the Scuderia section of the show. I spoke with the owner about the car. He remembered me since I talked to him about buying a 250 SII cab a few years prior. He asked me if he could bring the 250 to the show. I said absolutely!! I also awarded him a best in show back then. I ran that show for over 10 years.

He said that he had been looking for a 365 California for a while. Told me there are only 12 of the model left in the world. 10 LHD and 2 RHD. This car came from London. It's beautiful and seemingly in perfect condition. Glad to see him driving it in town! Really nice guy.

Funny......it's the 2nd time I have seen a 365 California. Back in the 70s when I made one of my many trips to Algar there was a 365 Cali in the shop. I asked about the car. The salesman said it was Al Garthwaite's wife's car but she didn't drive it much.

The 365 Cali was probably the first [non-prototype] model with the Type 245 engine. It was built in 1967 when the Queen Mother was a just show car and before the 365 GTC was under production. Very cool car and a great engine.

 

Engine is tipo 217B in the 365 California that was developed into the tipo 245.

It was introduced at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show with the 330 GTC and was built between 1966 and 1967. I thought 13 of the 14 produced still exist with only #10155 considered lost/destroyed/last seen in a scrapyard?

 

The owner said that one of the 12 LHD cars was destroyed somewhere in South America. Not sure about the other missing. Maybe I can find his contact info and ask. Sorry for my less than detailed comments.

 

I believe the two 365 P Tre-Posti cars (#8815 & #8971) both also carried Tipo 217B motors when new.

Well, New Jersey is not really South America, me thinks.
The missing car (10155) was last seen at Tony's Exotics, a wrecking yard in NJ/USA (near George Washington Bridge/NY).

Interesting that only the first (prototype) 365 California #8347 is said to have the tipo 571 330 GT 2+2 chassis with the following 13 having a tipo 598 chassis, and yet they (probably?) are all stamped Ferrari 330 GT with the chassis number plus the 3835 OM homologation number. #9889 and #10327 are, in addition to #9849 pictured.

The 500 Superfast, chassis stamped Ferrari 500 SF, also has a similar chassis to the 330 GT 2+2, but is tipo 578.

 

More chassis number stampings of 365 Californias.
9631, 9889, 9935 and 10327.

In 1972 the then owner of 9849 in NJ had the pop-up headlamps and the power steering removed and thrown in the trunk, and the car repainted burgundy. Only four owners later in 1987 was the car brought back to pop-ups.

Take your pick, I just refer to the model as 365 California.
