430 Modern Ferrari 430 Tail Light - Possible GROUP BUY?

@nchhotu Nick, can you confirm if your reverse lights in these two pics are the same and it is just different lighting conditions (ie, day vs dark/night). In the one pic it's just a ring of white LED's and in the other it looks like the whole center lights up

I think its the light. The sun directly hits my front garage. Reverse is way brighter than stock.

In direct sunlight, the OEM reverse lights were definitely brighter than the LED's, but frankly neither would illuminate anything in daylight.

I'll try again later when it's dark

I actually have a light meter, see if I can run some tests.

Ok, cloudy skies set in so I took some shots in cloudy daylight as well as a dark garage

I used a typical photographer light meter

The LED lights are closer to the meter than oem since they are outside the car, so results are skewed in their slightly in their favor

Accessory switch on, engine not running, I don't know if this matters but comparably, should be same

Also took a shot with the hazards on to compare blinkers, seems OEM are equal or significantly better in all cases except right at the bulb

Awesome comparison, John! Did you have an LED upgrade like from Scud Ing Swiss on your OEM lights or were they the standard incandescent bulbs?

What are your impressions overall? Happy camper?

I purchased the Scuding upgrade as I felt the lights needed something, but had not yet installed and then this came along, so the comparison is against OEM.

So to compare the two (Scuding upgrade to this), looks like it's

OEM look/style, not the greatest posts structurally (albeit can be shored up), super bright, incredibly well made high quality LED components (having them in hand)

Vs

Seemingly well made (no field testing yet), very well installed with 4 install points and metal post bracket, and a completely modern look, brightness more or less at OEM.

Unfortunately didn't get to test the brake light brightness, no one else home. This is the most important test, will see if I can test later.

So I am a happy camper with these, they look amazing and at night they will get the job done same as OEM. No less functionality and significant improvements in features imho.

I want to test the brake lights to make sure they are at least as bright as OEM, will do that later.

I would have liked a brighter reverse light.

Byron is this possible at this point? A brighter reverse light?

I know my Scud Ing Swiss LED upgrade is incredibly bright over OEM. Glad to see these are at least as bright as OEM. All these nice pictures have me thinking

 

I considered that and tried a couple things, but the brake pedal actually requires some pretty active force and then I didn't want to mess around with anything too heavy so skipped it.

I know, from what I've seen and read the Scuding Swiss are extremely bright, and with OEM taillights, that's a great solution.

Since these are full LED with rings, and LED blinkers, they need to 'glow' or they don't look as cool (again, imho), too bright at night would actually distort the glow, so these probably are about where they should be and I expect will look totally awesome in the dark. Once I get them all in, will shoot some nice pics.

I think we should also understand that these are LED and is more direct lighting compared to the oem ....which scatter the light more.

 

yes, 14 v 56 on the amount of light that makes it to the door a couple feet away at the center of the beam

you can see looking at the shot of the door, this is true what Flea says is true, the LED is definitely a more focused area, the incandescent basically just floods.

LED is also whiter light

that said, the OEM does illuminate more of the door based on the pic

they're different lights for sure, but I would say that if you were backing up against say some tall bushes, you're gonna get more light from the OEM's than you would from the LED's

you can see the side by side pics. basically, these lights are not brighter than OEM, they basically keep up. when you take everything into account though, they are definitely a very desirable solution for the F430 taillights.

maybe @ByronKong can do something about the reverse brightness, we'll see what he says

Comparing these with the Scud reverse, one noticeable difference why the Scud is very bright is because of the high-quality SMD chips they used on the forward facing as pictured below:

It has a projector-like lens that helps focus the light similar to your headlights but a very scaled-down version. Adding another white ring of LED to our current lights I would imagine just most likely enhances the glow effect but I don't think it'll be a drastic jump in the distance intensity unless the design is reconfigured to focus the LEDs somehow. That is my best guess.

Based on my personal experience, modern cars' white LEDs are terrible with visibility anyhow, the point is to have it bright enough to catch people's attention that you are backing up. I rely heavily on the factory backup sensors when backing up this car. Without the backup cams that I am used to in my other cars I am practically backing her up blind anyways so I go verrrrry slow

 

You are of course correct Tommy on the Scuding design, thank you for 'illuminating' that . There is no comparison between the two in terms of brightness achieved, the Scuding upgrade is a massive brightness increase over OEM.

And I suspect you are also correct that more LED's on the PBE lights, or even brightening them will probably not significantly increase received light.

Think it is safe to say at this point that the PB Engineering replacements are a very different looking taillight replacement and the Scuding upgrade is an intense brightness increase for existing lights.

So we still get the modern coolness factor, but not a brightness level upgrade.

I do not think this diminishes the PBE's in any way, at no point was there a claim that they were brighter (not that I recall seeing anyway).

 

It's not that we can't do brighter, we just have to balance a lot of factors. For example, the life of led, because the same area of the circuit board to add too much led will lead to heat dissipation problem. In addition, because our lamp is a smoke face, it also reduces the brightness of the lamp. The brightness could have been increased if we had done a transparent look, but I prefer the smoke face as it is now

Ok, so,.... had a chance to get the left side installed.

Pardon the partial update but I gotta say, DAMN, I am really, really psyched and wanted to share. They are BEYOND GORGEOUS! I can't believe how great they look! I was gonna take pics but phone pics do not do them justice, hopefully I can get some DSLR shots soon. You literally can't stop looking at them when they are on.

Not only do they look simply amazing, but they install extremely well. With the 4 posts, I was able to get them adjusted in the opening down to the millimeter. I really like a clean install. Before, my taillight gaps were all over the place, now I've got 4-5mm on both sides and the top, they are perfectly aligned.

And they are so SOLID, no movement at all. You feel like you could pull the car with them.

Some suggestions on the install which made it go really well:

Ordered 6mm stainless nylon flanged lock nuts to maximize adjustment ability and ensure nothing moves when done

Ordered EPDM washers for adjusting depth, this greatly allowed for positioning, by tightening down, you can move them by the millimeter

Tools that came in handy, stubby ratchets, and my tite-wrench (not used often, but great when it works out)

That ratchet extension in your last pic would have come in handy when I was changing my taillights out (3 times total). On my birthday list now.

 

I have to agree with Bryon. I rather have reliability and longevity with the LEDs. I honestly don't need the reverse light to be crazy bright. It's fine the way it is. Brightness of the stop and signal light looks great!
