LOL! It's hard to "please everyone" so I find the best anser is to "please yourself"..... It's also noted that he has, like an Uncle of mine, decided relatively early to "go do what I love" ..... I would think his car production is already profitable.... His wife enjoys horses, and they have real estate interests. ...and he calls her "a babe" and she is. That's another point of success I think..."the right one" and those that find it are blessed.
I tried to post here all the photos, but at the time no one found it very interesting. The 24H Series came to COTA but it was not even publicised... I actually spent like 4 days with the Team, not just the 24 hours of the race. At one point Jim patted the flank of the car, like he was encouraging a horse.....I died laughing.... "Go run, big fella.."
Same experience, same place. Nice guy. He happened to be parked next to an AM Zagato spyder in a gorgeous light green.
SCG hasn't updated their FB posts since Fri./race day. I'm sure they were incredibly disappointed in the early exit (mechanical?) and relatively noncompetitive pace in their class. https://www.facebook.com/ScuderiaCameronGlickenhaus .
Shame, as I'm sure he and they are very disappointed. He usually is on all the social networks. Kinda miss his posts here, but I think he left in a huff.
Certainly, but I personally wouldn't want to be associated with it or the others I listed. One cool thing about Glickenhaus is he's got **** you money and doesn't care about provenance. He does what he wants and doesn't care.
I knew 002C has a checkered past because Glickenhaus used to claim it was the first street car. I wasn't aware of any stories on the GT-40. All cool cars though.
Well, in the case of J6 Jim seemed to buy a car claimed to be the Le Mans winner and then he argued hard with everyone to convince them it was the 4th place car. I'm trying to research if there was any other stories. OK, I should take that one off my list as it was a "reverse" provenance story. Look at this thread and here is the reason FerrariChat has always uploaded its photos, I don't think a single other car forum has done that. Users use to get so ****ing mad that they couldn't IMG link. Now look at this great historic thread at Autosport and all the images are missing! https://forums.autosport.com/topic/90227-ford-gt-mk4-whereabouts/
I don't think it's accurate at all to say he doesn't care about provenance. I think he cares about provenance more than just about anyone walking the planet. Very few mods were needed to make the GT40 street legal and roadworthy, all reversible. He uses the cars on the road like few would, but I don't think he has sacrificed historical provenance at all in the process. He's kind of adding on a new chapter of provenance to it by using it on the street.
My main point is different than yours, he's not afraid to buy cars with questionable stories whether right or wrong.
To me, his collection, though smaller and less valuable than some, is extremely well curated and far more interesting than most "perfect" collections because he's acquired highly unique cars (Dino Comp, 512s, P4/5 (self-created!!), etc.). There are only so many unique cars out there, so you kind of have to grab them even if imperfect. I'd like to learn more about the concerns with 002c (haven't heard about that), but how do you not grab such an early car when you have the opportunity? I've seen perfect GTOs, LM's, SWB's and everything else many, many times over -- I think Jim's cars are more interesting because has absolutely found unique facets of Ferrari history. Capturing facets of history that "perfect" collections overlooked is what he's going for, and he's done it extraordinarily well. Even if Jim had unlimited dollars (which he doesn't), I don't think he wants to be the "nth" collection that has a perfect GTO -- he wants unique facets of Ferrari history, which he's very deftly acquired (both from a curation and financial perspective). I think every one of his purchases was brilliant and the cars have nothing to apologize for given the tiny number of examples that exist -- just need to be sure to represent them accurately.
I agree with you for Jim and even most collectors, from my first post I would have all in my collection except 0846 and P 4/5, probably not 002C either although that one has a better case.
..... and heeere we go .......... would be nice to stick to SCG RACING efforts in this thread which is in the RACING forum. Car bashing (there's a thread for that) has been beat to death a thousand times over and really gets old. .
I like them all. I couldn't admire the P4/5 effort more -- to have that vision, to move forward without Ferrari endorsement, and then get Ferrari's endorsement because the car was so good, and to out-Enzo the Enzo in almost every way (looks, weight, I think Aero). I might be wrong, but I suspect the side intakes on P4/5 influenced the F8 styling quite a bit. I'm much more of a vintage guy, so the newer Ferraris aren't as interesting to me, but the P4/5 is an exception. For 0846, even if it is only Piper's car, the construction of DP's cars was endorsed by Ferrari and the chassis was built by the original builder -- those are all huge distinctions from chopped up 250 GTE's et al. Certainly not the same as a serial numbered car, but definitely should not be lumped with run-of-the-mill replicas either. Given the tiny number of serial numbered cars, I'd have snapped up the DP car in Jim's shoes in a nanosecond and proudly represented it as that. I don't think 0846 has anything to apologize for as a car, just need to ensure it is represented accurately. I'll need to look up the 0002c issues -- but if I were in Jim's shoes, there is no way I'd pass up the opportunity to get that early car even if it has asterisks. Not trying to debate, but I think Jim's choices have extremely smart in every instance. Other deep-pocketed collectors have a checklist of the important models they want to acquire -- Jim doesn't care much about that standard checklist of great models -- he's targeted and scored a much better checklist of truly unique cars. All in my opinion, of course .
0846 does not exist. Incorrect. It was already well known that J6 was the 4th place car at Le Mans, 1967 years before Mr Glickenhaus bought it. He very wrongly claimed that it was him that researched that and revealed to the world about his car being the 4th place car, but there has never been any question that the Ford MK GT IV (J5) that has been at the Dearborn museum since the early 1970s is the 1967 Le Mans winner with the lowered floor for Dan Gurney. See my post here.
oh for gods sake, take it here: https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/the-one-and-only-0846-debate-thread.423520/page-437 over 10,000 posts just isn't enough .
Post your correction in the other thread and I'll read it there, let's not turn this thread into that one.
