    1982 Ferrari BBI S/N 40565
Listed in FOC News May 1982 as owned by Dennis L. Brooks M.D. Philadelphia, Pa. (Ferrari Owners Club)
Imported by: Europe ala Carte Beverly Hills, Ca.

A document passed on to me by the previous owner indicates the first published owner of S/N 40565 was Dennis L. Brooks M.D. Philadelphia, Pa.according to FOC News May 1982.
Thinking Dr Brooks was a "Marcus Welby MD" type, I didnt pay much attention until an internet hit yesterday on his name pulled this 23 page report on the Doctor who was not your average MD.
    https://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/1985/jul/25/cover-right-between-the-eyes/
The article, written by Steven Meyer and published by the San Diego Reader July 1985.

Quoting the article: "In March of 1981, Dr. Dennis L. Brooks, chairman of the department of ophthalmology at Germantown Hospital near Philadelphia, formally applied for staff privileges at College Park Hospital on Montezuma Road near San Diego State University. Brooks, who claimed to have performed more than 10,000 cataract surgeries by 1981, was, among the general public, probably the most famous cataract surgeon in the nation.
Brooks, who claimed to have performed more than 10,000 cataract surgeries by 1981, was, among the general public, probably the most famous cataract surgeon in the nation. He’d written a book called D o n't B e A f r a i d o f C a t a r a c t s . He’d appeared on The Merv Griffin show and some twenty-five other television shows. Art Linkletter appeared in television commercials for him, one of which is still aired several times each week in San Diego. Brooks had been a guest on radio shows nationwide, including several with syndicated commentator Paul Harvey. And dozens of newspaper articles had been written about him. To College Park, a small, ninety-nine-bed hospitali that went out of business last year. Brooks represented much-needed revenue".

Dr Brooks Southern California connection may explain the Europe ala Carte purchase and not an east coast importer.

Im looking for anyone that may have a copy of FOC News May 1982 to see what was published about Dr Brooks. In the mean time. I have written the FOC to see if they can assist.

This is interesting stuff for my scrapbook.

My cars warranty has the original owners name on it, using the magic sorcery of FB I searched for that name and I got one hit, I contacted that person and he told me he was the son of the original owner(who was a young man back then and have fond memories of the car) he also told me his father already passed away and he always loved my car and he sent me a picture of him with it when his dad just got it.
He told me if I ever want to sell it to please reach out to him first, and that’s what I will do.

Hey Dave, I have a minor point. Remember our old thread " US or Euro spec BBi. Did we ever make a definitive decision on the door jamb placards? The ones that say who the BBi was manufactured for and the importer. I removed mine and stuck it in my folder. Now, I was told by an authority that US or Euro it should be on the car. Thoughts. See you in Elkhart.

    Hi Rich,
I'm assuming your door jamb placard question is in regards to FCA judging? Correct? If so, I'm not the person to answer that question. I havent found a really good current source online how or what the current FCA judging rules are for BB's since all BB's imported and titled in the USA were grey market cars and were all laid out a bit differently by those importers. If you have a "Tween Car" as I have heard someone on F-Chat call it, you are disadvantaged Vs someone having either a full Euro or full US spec car. I believe the judging for BB's or any grey market car has changed being much more stringent than years prior to FCA2013 at RA.

I'm not attending FCA 2024 at RA. My BBi secured one Gold, and five Platinos with a number of major awards in previous FCA International meets as judged by Dick Fritz's Team. In my opinion Dick Fritz was very fair and straight forward with judging BB's and I'm happy with that.

We do not interpret or enforce law. Those labels were attached to comply with legal requirements and we have no idea what those requirements are if they are still required. One of several reasons grey market cars are at an advantage in judging. On a US car I know exactly what is supposed to be there, on a grey market car we really have no idea so as usual the owner gets the benefit of that situation. The judging of any of the grey market cars is in fact easier, not more strict. If it is in any way more strict it is because of better more informed judges, not judging rules.

I was reached out on instagram by the son of the 3rd owner I believe. He was able to give me more information and was able to explain a few things I had noticed.

He told me about the first and second owners and it appears that the car stayed in a very small radius in florida. Cool to hear about. The first owner added a ton of miles to it daily driving mine.

    Hi Rich,
Theres no FCA pictorial on-line guide for BB/BBI grey market cars similar to what is available on-line for Preservation Class cars. As you know, Grey market cars differ from pre DOT/EPA cars being imported prior to federal regulation. From what I can see much seems to be "judge opinion" for points deduction. You will need to sort through what was posted on https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/u-s-federalized-or-euro-original.691275/
The post below posted from the above link is a yellow flag to me as even fractional point loss can cost you a Platino in a contest that requires 97 out of 100 points for Platino.
You are advantaged having either a full federalized BB/BBI or a full Euro Spec car.
As I stated previosly in my opinion Dick Fritz was very fair and straight forward with judging BB's and I'm happy with that.

"Also, the last couple of times I have had my BB judged the judges asked whether I wanted the car judged as federalized or original. In 30 years of doing concours I never had this question posed directly until lately. There was always discussion on particulars but never the direct question. The powers that be must have made this decision.
Thats true and I was one of them. As you know we allow the grey market cars to be shown as original configuration or federalized. Thats still kind of problematic because there were so many different paths taken for federalization. In practice if its shown in federalized form which is a small minority of the time very little emphasis is placed on the modifications. If its shown in original configuration and proper deduction methodology is followed The door beams and labeling that may still be present in the door jams should not amount to over 1/2 a point unless it was a particularly poor/sloppy job of modification. We have a term called "Tween cars". Its in between being federalized and original. The smog is all gone but the bumpers and lights are still modified is a good and common example. Those get hit pretty hard with deductions. Generally a gray market car stripped of 90% of its modifications is not going to suffer badly for the remaining minor details."

Thanks Dave for your thoughts. You know your stuff like rifledriver. I don't want it to seem like my pants are on too tight. I pretty much know what should be proper and what is not. I am always learning these incidentals about our cars. I take it all serious enough but not too serious

It is these small incidentals that always intrigue me. I am looking forward to brats and beer at Elkhart Lake, sort of my home turf. Wait a minute I mean beer and brats. You have to get your priorities straight.

Sorry I wont see you Rich. Good luck. I do get a bit serious about this stuff and have joined our local Fuelfed chapter which is gaining popularity. It's much more laid back as a Euro classic car club, and I'm having fun with it.
