I voted for the 355. I own 512TR and I have heard the 512TR with exhaust, 348 with Imola and no cats, 355 with Tubi and no cats, nice carb 308, 456, 550, 360 with Tubi...etc...but nothing...nothing comes close to 355 with tubi and no cats. It's the sweetest sound of any production car.
To tell you the truth... I was in a friend's F355 with a Tubi and no cats. I was disappointed--it wasn't nearly as loud as my 348 with Tubi and no cats. It didn't scream the same way... I'm trying to be unbiased here; I actually expected the sound of his car to be far superior...
Put me down for any of the carbed (no cat) 12 cyls too (the modern cars with only 2 throttle plates don't make as glorious an induction noise).
Fully agree. Same motor/carbs in my 365 GT4 2+2. Been to several events where people asked if I had a Tubi on it. Sorry folks, its stock. That's what these cars used to sound like... The BB/LM's scream.
I'd love to vote for a twelve, but the 355 is amazing with stock or tweaked exhaust. Just freeking amazing. Robb
365 GTB/4 Daytona. It was the first Ferrari I had ever seen & heard as I child, I think I was 6. I remember another kid told me it was a Corvette, for some reason I knew early on that no vette could sound like that.
360 has a noise that'll make you bleed from your ears. It is ungodly, probably the most beautiful mechanical noise. Closely followed by the F355 Challenge.
I voted other... if you stay to classic Ferraris and newer, then I'd vote for the Challenge Stradale... if you open it up to the vintage Ferraris, then there's several that I'd vote for over any in the list.
No Way F355, V8??? I am sure with aftermarket Tubi....no, no, no The 12 is always Ferrari's flagship, in this case it's the Boxer, 512BB. But the classic carb 12 sure make Ferrari what it is today.... I bet the older folks are laughing at us and say you guys heard nothing yet...
Ha ha ha...may be we are all too young to experience the vintage F-car's sound krub..P'Moo. It's a matter of personal taste and opinion, I guess. I really love the F355 with Tubi and no cats sound. It has that bassy sweetness to it that the 360's mostly metalic sound or the 328+Koenig's traditional V8 with big-bore exhaust sound can't compare. Even the V12 like the 512M or TR don't have it.
Seems like eveyone is voting for thier own car or the one they want to buy. Enzo was enamoured with the sound of the 12 which was why he made all the flagship cars with them, both have different sounds the V8s are high pitched and have a wail, the carbed flat 12s are deep, loud, and mean sounding with a mechanical symphony at high rpm with lots induction roar, babies cry, dogs bark and women cower when blasting by, you don't get that in any V8.
Ditto. And more specifically, Peter Sachs' '64 GTO is probably the best sounding road car on my list. Some of the 312 T3s are sweet as well.
Ok, to get nit picky, the question is what ENGINE sounds the best. So forget exhaust systems straight away. That leaves carbs and engine. Injections all sound pretty crap, except 512TR/M. But, for sheer engine noise it HAS to be 246 Dino. Those chains singing away and the induction barble/gargle is to die for, and just a standard exhaust is all that is required...how many time do you hear of "Sports Exhaust" when referring to 246...?? Eh? NEVER. Simply put, it's because they don't need artificial enhancement like the dreadful sounding 355/360 engine. (I said engine, not exhaust) Daytona is close, but the gear drive of the cams is a bit too "fragile" sounding for me. The best throttle response of any Ferrari. (Due simply to extremely quick gearing of linkage!) Personally though, a carb Boxer is the MUST have. Dino's just aren't fast enough.
I have and love the sound of a 355 but am unsure why it is significantly better than a 360? What is diffrent between the two? ken
I love the smell of hot aluminum in the morning ... it smells like ... victory! For those of us old enough to remember the classic F1 cars, the Daytona is what a winner sounds like. 365s, 250s, ... gotta love those classic V12s. No cats. No EGR. Just oomph.
360 (1 8 3 6 4 5 2 7) has different firing order to 355 (1 5 3 7 4 8 2 6), and both have very different exhaust principles. 355 exhaust sounds great as it merges the two banks into all 8, but 360 has opposing flow direction within it's silencer, which is nonsense! Add that to the lazy blip repsonse to throttle of a 360, and it disappoints really. Get it on the road though and its response is great, just not a fan of the fly by wire. All flat plane V8's just sound like a hot 4, because it's all they are!! 90 deg V8's sound tough but just don't rev...which is just about all other V8's.
So what you are saying is that people are voting with their pocketbooks? Actually, I think that is wonderful. That just shows that Fchat is full of real owners and not a bunch of nut case magazine racers. Forza!
355 with a Tubi and a little motor work (FerrariDoug349's car [no not a typo, he got it wrong when he registered, hahaha] It used to be mine). The 360, even with a Tubi, just isn't the same. Art
Nothing sounds as good as a carbed V12. Now that I have a 456 with a tubi, the sound is great when you are outside of the car. But, nothing is as glorious inside the car as a Daytona from 4000 to 7700 rpm. That is what I miss most.
I voted 355, because I'm addicted to running my stock 355 at 6500+rpm in tunnels with the top down, but I have to say that Dave's 348 sounds fantastic, especially when you're behind him at full acceleration in 3rd gear at 80mph.
Daytona...so smooth and so strong....Then it's a tie between 355/360 w/aftermarket or 360 CS stock. However, I think the 430 w/ aftermarket will be the best. Forza, Cavallini
