It SHOULD sell for a few dollars but we all know what it WILL sell for. Not trying to be a wise guy but it just seems to be a fact. There was a particular Ferrari, possibly the 365 2+2, that had the EXACT same mirror as an older ALFA. Same part number on the mirror and all BUT - the mirror was something like five times as much from a dealer. Sidenote - how would you Dino owners feel about paying $12.95 for an upper engine coolant hose? (the "C" shaped one with two different cuff diameters) Bob Z.
I read somewhere that Chevrolet gave 2 different part numbers to the exact same rubber shifter boot that was used on Corvettes and Corvairs. Gee, do you think the Corvette numbered boot was more expensive?
So now we know what Sexchange's markup is: Lyle $104.40 - Mike Dunn $95.70 = 9.4% T308 (+9.4% = T336.95)
My Esprit vac pump went out and, like a nit wit, I called for replacement prior to removal. I wanted to do it all at once.... DUMMY.... once the new one arrived I discovered a Chevy part number right on the flange.... soooooo $380 for a 50 dollar pump..... But I got to keep the really cool LOTUS box it came in to make me feel better.....
In addition Mike is a stable business, can pinpoint the delivery date, without continued promises after your credit card has been processed, and has not filed for bankruptcy !!!
Aston Martain DB7 power steering resiviour..$800 from the Aston dealer. Remove said resiviour flip over..notice the Jaguar logo on it. Call Jag dealer..$97.00 in stock..Aston said it was 3 weeks away...things that make you go hummmm..
Multiple part #s for the same part is pretty standard practice in a variety of industries, as well as multiple price points for the same part. It's so pervasive that there are even companies who sell databases of part x-refs to industry buyers to help save money. The key to combating this inefficiency is definitely to establish an x-ref directory of Ferrari parts and sources (a few do exist, but I haven't seen a definitive source). This would be a great addition to the subscribed members of f-Chat.
Hello Tom K. Tom Yang made one. He turned a lump of aluminum on a lathe and filed the finger indentations. Go to his site and put "shift knob" in search. john
Well, perhaps not definitive, but I've put all the Vintage cross references I could find on my site: http://www.jb330gt.com/FerrariCrossRef.htm (note: my email address is now different). I'll update it if there's anything specific to add. There is a short 308 cross reference here: http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Garage/8167/308archives/exchange/ Ferrarichat used to have one for 308s too, can't find it now: http://www.ferrarichat.com/partsandservice/308PartsXref Cheers, JB
Thanks guys! My parts story: Sometimes it depends where in the distribution chain you are. Back "in the day" I needed a new distributor for my 6 cyl Mercury Capri(German Ford). The local foreign parts house wanted 300-350 1970's dollars! Called the dealer. $55! How many did I want? Open the Autolite box. Pull out the Bosch box. Distributor w/points & condenser, cap and rotor. Dwell preset. Drop in. Set timing. Drive!
