The House has voted to require all broadcasters to eliminate analog TV broadcasts and switch to digital transmissions on January 1, 2009. This means that if approved, effective January 1, 2009, every analog TV in the country will be a worthless hunk of junk unless equipped with a "digital to analog" converter box. Of course this will not be a major problem with a large home television set, but as for millions of small, portable TV sets, they are pretty much worthless, totally unusable, JUNK. Who would waste their time buying a table top converter box to hook up a 2 inch portable LCD TV set to it?. MILLIONS of perfectly functioning small portable TV sets will be absolutely unusable for their intended purpose. Boat anchors anybody?

    What doesn't make sense?

I have a little 13" tv here that I've had around since the late 80s. It still works fine, it's out in the garage so I can watch racing or football while tinkering. In 2009, this fine piece of Japanese engineering will no longer have a purpose

Horsefly this has been in the works for years. until early last year the deadline for the change over was 2007. Now you have 2 more years to use your mini tv

Duh?????? Of course it's been in the works. But the deadline was recently pulled back to December 31, 2008. I've got a 7 inch Panasonic that I got as a Christmas gift back in 1978 and it still works. Thanks to the "race to digital", it won't be worth anything much longer. And neither will the portable LCD TV that somebody receives for Christmas THIS YEAR.

The next gigantic screaming festival will begin when people SUDDENLY realize that there is no such thing as a weak signal on digital TV. It's either THERE, or it's BLACK. The overall coverage area is smaller. No such thing as a fuzzy picture. Therefore, people who were satisfied to receive a fuzzy picture out in the fringe areas will now receive NOTHING!!! Welcome to digital.

Actually my experience is if the signal is weak it gets pixel-ated/blocky.

You can still use it as a monitor for video/dvd, TV games, & decoration piece in a back yard patio.

I think actually some maker will sell a converting device to enable your analog TV to view digital transmission.

So, what's to stop someone from getting some analog broadcasting equipment and making their own personal channel? There has to be a use for these frequencies especially with all of the sets around..
