You already have a big sedan, it is tough to suggest a much better big sedan the 750. If you want a coupe I would suggest 928 GTS but the interior is quite small. How about a S600 coupe (W140).
The E39M5 is a pretty good sugestion too, quite a different animal than the 750.

actually a Lexus SC300 with the single turbo 2JZ swap would make for a comfortable and fairly luxurious highway killer

To be honest, I haven't seen a movie in about 6 months. I'll rent it when it comes out though, definitely.

Those are some of the ideas I had - S600, S500, Maybe AMG versions of the two (but probably out of the target range, but would hold resale better). M5 on the list, too.

That Renntech SL on ebay is unreal!

If you are going from an E38 to an S class, you will find the handling on the S class is, well in short, syrupy, and indirect. I felt it going from the 7 to a new SL. You get used to it though. (and it makes you appreciate the BMW more when you go back)

BTW guys he looks like he is going from a full sedan to a full sedan..not some sort of compact (3 series, Audi 4s, etc)

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned an Audi RS6, although I don't know that they've gotten down in the $45k range yet.

Highway Killer? Just ask Interstate 85. Had my 350Z for 5 months and it has already eaten up 13,000 miles probably 95% highway/interstate. I like it a lot. Its got 6 speeds and if I want to embarass somebody I throw it in 5th and crank it to triple digits in about 2 seconds flat...

I copped it brand new for about $30k, but if you got a tricked out one it would be closer to $45k. I know you mentioned a sedan and for $45k I personally would look closely at a pre-owned M5 or M3. Just about anything European and over 300hp. If an automatic is ok than any of the V8 Audis to.

Oh and in case you don't already have one, def. want to set aside $400 for the Valentine One and a custom install...
