This is inspired by the wallet thread. I'm not trying to get anyone mugged so don't answer if the question spooks you. The reason I'm asking is because I never, ever have any cash on me and people seem to think that's very, very weird. I've found myself ordering off the McDonald's value menu and digging through the ashtray for quarters. I'll buy coffee with a debit card. I guess it's kind of embarrassing when I do that for $1.39 at the 7/11, but not embarrassing enough to make me ever carry anything. Cashiers sometimes shoot me weird looks, too. My friends always seem to have cash, but me? Very rarely. I'll travel clear across the country with 30 cents - been doing that for years. Every dime I make is usually paid by check, so I guess I have little opportunity to handle cash these days.

Very rarely. Cashiers take forever with cash.

One theory is, if you have (much) cash on you, you will spend it.

We would pay the bills on payday (online), and have a ton of cash left in the checking account, and our tendency was to spend about 80% of it on JUNK, and save 20%.
We flipped-flopped that, now we save 90% and keep 10% in the ck account.
If we ever need more, we simply do online transfers, which we SELDOM ever do.
And we don't believe in plastic unless we are on a vacation and have to charge flights, rooms and cars.

We's gonna be taking a heckuva vacation this winter....

i agree with wiskey, i always use my card it allows me to keep track of where my money is going so i can track it and try to cut back in certian areas. If use cash, at the end of the day i wonder where it all went. For me using my debit card is just more convienent

I see my gf charge her card all the time so I started copying her. I probably carry 50 bucks in case a place doesn't accept cards.

Using cards could be even worse when it comes to spending for alot of people.

You hear those stories of families with 10 cards using several to cover the repayments of the others.

At least with cash you can see how much you're depleting.

of course if you do online banking, you can see precisely how much you're spending with cards in a matter of seconds.

So 50/50 really. I carry some cash, usually <AUD $200. I never withdraw more than $200 at a time, and if I have to pay for a big purchase these days I just use a card (I withdrew thousands in cash to pay for a watch years back when I had no card). I try to use the card regularly to improve my credit rating (e.g. petrol).

there's barely any need to carry cash anymore. I usually have about 40-50 on me, but almost never more than that. I use the debit card for nearly all my purchases, because online banking allows me to track every single cent I spend.

I rarely use cards for food when I go out and eat alone -- the only time i'll use it for food is when I'm taking the girlfriend or some friends out to dinner.

I always have a few bucks on me. I use my card for most purchases over $30. Its funny b/c I never really thought about it, but the more I have cash in my wallet the more often I spend it on cr@p.

I keep a modicum of cash in the house (maybe a few hundred bucks) for when we want to run to grab an icecream cone or when the girlscouts come by selling cookies etc. But day to day I never carry cash. All my purchases either go on the debit card or if I am buying gas I have a company gas card.

The credit cards are used for hotel reservations and airline tickets almost exclusively.

Same here. Even for small amounts, many places have "Swipe and Go" type systems where anything under 25$ doesnt require a signature. As fast as cash on average. What drives me nuts is being behind someone writing a check...cue jeapordy theme music......
