The console in my 308 QV has over time developed two "sag" areas, one under the guages, and one at the bottom right corner near the shift plate.

While I had to take the ashtray out the lift up the switch "template" to repair the sagging areas, I decided to refinish my ashtray lid because it had two scratches (you can see in the photo also) that went down to metal.

Here are the before pics. You can clearly see the sags in the fiberglass of the console.......

My 308 has an aluminum framed insert. If yours is aluminum as well, you can remove your panel bend it back to shape and reinstall.

    first step,

open ashtray lid and remove the inner "tray" piece, it's not screwed together. Just rotate the inner piece clockwise and wiggle it as you rotate it and it'll lift out.

next, there are two screws in the bottom, that hold the ashtray outter piece down. remove these two screws and the whole piece will lift out. Be careful not to drop a screw down into the depths of the console, (not to worry I fished it out ;)

here is the removed ashtray pieces........

then you can't take the lid out of the outta part of the tray because it's rivoted in. so I just taped off the outter piece (chrome)
Then I removed the nut that holds the cavallino on. (cleaned the little guy up with a toothbrush and dish detergent)
On the lid I used a gloss black spray paint. Gloss because the factory paint does have a sheen, which i'm sure that twenty years ago was quite glossy, at least i think it looks better than doing it matte.
I would open the lid all the way and paint, then dry, then open half way, paint and dry, then close, paint and let dry, then repeated all steps till I had four coats on. Turned out GREAT !! (so far it's till drying)

The ashtray lid is supposed to satin-black. Not matte, not glossy, but right in between.(like the bumpers on the 308)

    now while that was drying,
    it's onto the "sag" repair,

first I cleaned the leather that was tucked around the edge of the inside really, good.

I first measured (roughly how long it would to cut the wood that I would use to prop up and support the console. Looked to be about 3.5".
I cut a piece of 1x1/2" board and tried fitting it under the lip and the bottom corner of the shift plate, (you have to pry up the console around the shift plate to make it level) after a few trimmings, I pryed up the console edge and wedged the wood under the lip. PERFECT FIT !!

Next I moved up the one under the guages, It was a more akward fit. So I decided to drive a wedge angled pieced straight under it and ontop of the frame the the ashtray sits on. (again it finished about 3 1/4 inches. Again it worked GREAT ! It's fiberglass so BE CAREFUL !

You can tell more from the pics.......
(Notice how dirty the leather around the lip was, here are the items I used to clean it.)

As soon as the ashtray finishes drying and I get everything reassembled, I'll take a final photo, probably tomorrow.

I thought about doing "satin" but from the can I couldn't tell how it would end up, but mine did look more glossy than matte. That was the easy part, I can always go back and hit it a lick with satin to top it off.

edit, now that it has dried, it does look too glossy, I'm gonna top it with satin ;)

Excellent! I did this on my '85 QV today and the console sag is history. The only thing I did different was to paint the block under the guages black to match my interior. Otherwise, you could see the wood through the small crack that remained. Thanks for documenting this. An easy 15 minute fix for something that has been bothering me for months.

Great job! The write-up and photos are a big help. Mine is in the exact same condition and has been bugging me for a year now. This repaint and sag fix is now on my "to-do" list-
    Thanks again !!!!

LOL. I did the same fix to my console a few years back, but I opted for a longer board cut so that the pressure didn't bend down the metal strip causing it to sag.
But it does look much better.

Nice job; thanks for the post. My 308 didn’t have the “sags”, but I had to do some ashtray refurbishing as you did. And there’s really no good way to polish the chrome ashtray surround (and the shift gate) without removing them. Such a small thing really made a big difference in the appearance of the interior.

When I refinished my ashtray, I dabbed a few small (very small) dots of clear silicon around the back perimeter of the cavallino so that metal doesn't rest on metal..causing scratches. It sits flat and secure when this is done and won't shift around.
