Aftermarket ECU (Motec) install in 308

I'm all set. I ordered 1/16" x 1" adhesive backed rubber from mcmaster when I ordered the wire wrap.

I've had a lot better luck with T6 than T651. In this case I just wanted a couple straight bends and Lana was home, so I used the torch. When Lana isn't home, I throw it in the oven, set it to clean and it comes out dead soft.

reminds me of the evening i spent with my buddy detaling our cars the night before a drive, we tried to play off that we spent the night at a strip club but wife wouldn't believe it! she knows me too well, if i burn the evening away it's always something car related.

..at least i have a good cover should the need arise nahh, she's to cool with my addiction as it is.

 

I have my Motec M8 installed in the rear rt side behind the engine and it works flawlessly.Wires are much shorter as well.

 

I didn't catch your earlier mention of struggling with bending aluminum. 6061 (usually T6 hardness) can be curved and welded but doesn't like being bent too sharply. While not quite as strong as 6061, the best aluminum "alloy" for any kind of forming operation is 3003 which is realy not an alloy. It's 100% pure aluminum. All the other alloys have additives to give them various mechanical properties. The 3003 type usually comes slightly work hardened from rolling it into a sheet but still bends nicely. If you want to get really crazy with coumpound shapes you can anneal it to make it softer. It's very weldable and of all the alloys it's the most resistant to corrosion and cracking. Kitchen aluminum foil is made of 3003. Most aluminum, car bodies are made from this stuff and on aircraft it's formability is used for the highly curved transitions between the wings and the fusilage for example.

 

I just realized the GM IAC stepper motor I have eats 4 of the 8 aux outputs...that will never do, I had other plans for them. The motec manual doesn't provide a lot of guidance on stuff like that. A bosch unit only needs 2 output...just one more reason to build a new intake.

 

A Ford IAC valve (cheap) has 2 wires.

 

I'm probably being overly cautious, but I don’t want to take any chances. I would save some wire by mounting it in back, but it wouldn’t really be any easier to install I don't think. I would still need to run quite a few wires up front (tach, front wheel sensors, power, intercooler pump, intercooler fan, radiator fan, slip indicator light) and it’s not really much harder to pull the larger bundle once everything is apart. Plus all the fuses and relays are together this way and I like that....not that is works any better.

 

I knew the ford unit only eats 1 output, but I wasn't sure how well they work since everyone else thinks they need atleast 2 and I've never messed with one. Is that what you are running? If so, are you happy with it?

 

We use them on most of the stand-alone cars at the shop. Be sure you test it before you install it. They work pretty well. My M4 didn't have any trouble running it. The older Autronic SMC doesn't pulse it at a high enough frequency so you can really hear it click. Just play with the frequency setting in the Motec until you find one it likes.

Edit - oh yeah, we tend to use them because they bolt right up to aftermarket Ford 65mm throttle bodies that are available EVERYWHERE.

yeah, I knew better but I had a piece and it was the right size......it all turned out fine in the end, I just got to make it twice. I worked in a shop years ago where one of the guy would laugh and say "We make everything nice because we make everything twice".

 

I messed around with the IAC and finally just removed it. Could not get it to work properly and was able to program around it. Tonight I removed everything out of the trunk area. There was tons of insulation and multiple fiberglass panels all designed to keep heat out of that area. If all that is gone from your car, then for sure, the CPU should not be mounted there. BTW, does anyone know what all that white baffling stuff is made of?

 

Do you know what the fequecny on the M4 is? For no particular reason other than it makes all my yellow wires go the same direction I was planning to use my ign5&6 which are 5000hz. My aux 1-4 are 10000 hz

Have you use a bosch or subaru 3 wire for comparison?

I have a ford throttlebody, but it's twin from a mustang and not equiped for IAC. The twin is a nice fit to the blower inlet. I built a GM unit into the throttle to blower adapter because the haltech needed it. I could just as easy mount a ford unit I guess.

Does pep boys have them and what do I ask for?

 

All that is gone from my trunk and it gets hot in there. I don't know what it's made from.

Which IAC were you using? The only thing I wasn't able to do with the GM unit is start the car cold, it just didn't flow enough air and I hard to crack the throttle 1/2 way. After the engine was running it worked well though and it warm started fine...just the cold start problem.

Yeah, I have two 5.0 Mustang throttle bodies on there and one still has the Ford IAC on it. The other IAC opening is plugged. It all works well!

 

Mike, I was working with a GM 4 wire treaded IAC unit. After the second one, I gave up trying to make it work. I could not get the engine to idle correctly when cold.

 

Same as I had. I did actually port mine a bit to get it to flow more, but it was still marginal. I found that if I set the idle hot using the butterfly with the IAC closed, I had enough air to get a good cold idle. I also found that it's critical to have the timing and fuel map set be constant in the idle range. If the timing in particular changes as rpm increases slightly (the engine tends to hunt at idle. Like say the map says 10 at 1000, and 15 at 1500 the engine hunts, but adding a 10 at 1250 point solves the problem.

Maybe I'll go ahead and run 2 wires back. I can use the ford unit and if there is still a cold start or idle problem I can use the second for an idle solenoid to supplement the IAC or switch to a bosch IAC.

 

Will the Ford throttle body fit on to the stock intake?
If not what kind of mods need to be done to fit?

 

I doubt it will fit but I haven't tried it. Mine is a 77 (formerly carbureted) 308 which now has a supercharger and electronic programable fuel injection and ignition. Everything on top of the engine is custom. I suppose you could make some sort of an adaptor plate.

It's way less than that. I can't recall, but I think on the M4 software it is selectable in the idle menu. I think it was happy around 400 hz.

We used an antique Link ecu on an MR2 yesterday to get 380 wheel horsepower (about 470 at 20% drivetrain loss) at 1.6 bar of boost (23 psi) on ~102 octane). It's a built bottom end (that we built) but a stock cylinder head. Cams would put us over the 500hp mark. Pump gas (93 octane) made right at 400 flywheel hp.

It's selectable on the M800 too, I just didn't want to use an output that wasn't capable of the required output....I've got a couple that are only 200hz, they're going to fan/pump relays.

That all works out, pump gas should be good for about 250 hp/l, exactly 400 on a 1.6l engine.

Making hp has never really been an ECU issue, so I'm not surprise. The ECU issues are generally more about transition performance, particularly off idle. The real early ECUs only had 8 rpm and load points...they ran and made hp, but streetability just wasn't there. The new ECUs do a much better job.

 

Does anybody have a source or what to ask for on the Ford IAC (most parts stores only understand make and model these days)? It looks like there are at least 2 versions, one a TB mount and one with hose barbs….I guess I could use either since I’m currently set-up for neither

How about a source for the connector? The guy I normally deal with said he doesn’t have a source for Ford connectors. I need to find a ford TPS connector too.

I'm pretty sure my 5.0 throttle bodies came from the 1987 Mustang. Other Fords of that era used the same IAC. I've seen them attached to other throttle bodies. Finding an electrical connector for the IAC wasn't easy but I did find one. I'll try to figure out tomorrow where I got it and what the part number is.

BTW: I'm still waiting to get hold of the CF guy.
