Thank you David for those terrific shots. This is my favorite thread on F-chat. Here is a small contribution of my own, Villeneuve at Long Beach, 1981.

    Cheers,

Thanks David. All Can-Am pics are more than welcome ;-)

Matthias, according to a french magazine, it was 0870. Pedro Rodriguez finished 5th, wich is a pretty good result for a 3l facing Big Bangers.

    Kurt,

Excellent photo! When I started this thread it was one of my hopes to inspire other enthusiasts to dig out some of there old photos taken at races and get togethers in the past and share them
I did not want my collection to sit in boxes in the basement and serve no purpose. I am sure there are many people that think I am crazy to share all of these at no cost but it would not be the first time I have been called nuts.

That's what a F1 car should look like! A fire breathing machine with wings and pipes and all sorts of carbs poking about. Wonderful shots

    thanks

    Thanks David,

I only started shooting photos about 1975 and rarely went out of So. California so my collection isn't nearly as extensive as yours. But, like you, I'm happy to post some for everyone to enjoy. It doesn't make much sense to have them sitting in a storage box like they have been for 20+ years. Here are a couple from Long Beach 1976 when I was just starting out.

Lauda and Regga's cars in the pit lane before practice. And then Regga and Lauda getting ready to take to the track.

    Cheers,
    Kurt O.

I was in Milan about ten years ago and saw the turbo car at a shop owned by Finotto. I had a good look at the car and was surprised to learn that they had manufactured their own cylinder heads for the car. A huge undertaking to say the least.
I am sure they did not have the resources develope the car. Who knows?

Based upon a recent press article ,the most adequate indication for the car shall be " Ferrari 308 GTB IMSA Gr.5 Carma". Back 1979/80 the gentlemen drivers Carlo Facetti and Martino Finotto ( names initials : Car-Ma FF ) operated a small shop in Zingonia ,close to Bergamo, realizing with a small team of technicians this Gr.5 racer on the "silouhette" of the Ferrari 308. The target was the participation at Gr.5 championship and IMSA races.
From the original 308 body only the mid section was maintained, front and back sections were redesigned, including corners ( suspensions and wheel hubs) and external panels. The transverse mounted V8-3L engine was turbocharged via 2 K27 turbochargers+aftercoolers but maintained carburators. To improve air flow a new 4 valve engine head was designed ( at that time QV was not in production by Ferrari) as well as a new, high capacity engine water cooling system to accommodate a top power of 920 to 950 HP @ 8800 RPM for a max torque of 105 KGM @ 6500 RPM. By a a mass of 1020 KG the car was REALLY fast and could reach a top speed between 285 and 415 Km/H, based upon trasmission, on 19" wheels.
In 1981 car debuted at 24 hours of Daytona and completed just 10 laps but performed the best lap in 1'48"14, in front of Porsche, Lancia and many other factory cars. In the same year the car raced at Monza, Pergusa, Silverstone and Kyalami . Few races were made also in 1982. Accordingly to Mr. Facetti, the car was too advanced and difficult to develop ,for the technology level of the `80 , the limits being posed by tires ,engine management / electronics, transmission and aerodinamics ( made in house at Carma by Mr. Degan, former Alfa Romeo/Autodelta engineer ). As reference Mr. Facetti cited that at Daytona practice, he passed on the straight line the Porsche of Danny Ongais "like he was at idle", in fact Danny's speed was 357 Km/H. All together it seems that 3 of these cars were made, one owned by Mr. Roberto Benelli. The full article can be asked at [email protected]
PS. This project had apparently nothing in common with the Michelotto developments on the 308 even if there are some similarities, being Michelotto at that time more oriented to rally cars. To be noted that on the same time frame Ferrari had in house own developments on V8 turbo applications, which later became 208 Turbo, 288 GTO and F40.

If it's the Carma Car and I have some other pictures showing the same car on race no. 10, then it is 18935 (and not 19835)

    Hi David
Will mine do? The MIGHTY Carma FF308 taken at Silverstone. I remember standing at Copse, which is fairly quick, but even so you could see the acceleration which was visibly more than the Porsche 935s. What an exciting car.
