DOES ANYONE NOW THE PRODUCTION NUMBERS OF EARLY 1985 AND 1986 TESTAROSSAS? HOW MANY USA AND EURO FOR BOTH 1985 AND 1986.
According to Redheaded in 1985 there were 568 built and in 1986 819 built worldwide. Not many. I wonder how many are left? Ron
That is interesting - if it is verified. So where does this put the legend that "Ferrari just made too many of these for them to be worth anything"? Maybe the pundits have their figures mixed up with the 87 to 92 model years.
Well, mine is red. I am going to guess without research yet that about 80% of these two years made were red/tan. However, I have a problem with the Redheaded breakdown - my car (xxx60447) would be a 1985 according to them, but it is U.S. registered as a 1986. Maybe some 86 models were really made in 1985? So, where is there a specific list of the SN# versus color, date of mfg, etc.? Or, is this information just lost to history?
86 red/blk here...819 made in 86...sweet, looks like the fly mirror is low in numbers then. A bunch were slammed with lower mirrors and the added second for sure. PS....James Wood. My "glass" car was made in July 76, but is on title as a 77 here, apparently the boat ride over back in those days took alot longer, therefore not uncommon to have up to a six month regist road date......maybe the same thing happened to your TR?
If there isnt a TR registry, looks like someone should create one. That would help answer the question of "how many are left". PS There is at least 1 86 Red/Tan flying mirror in Colorado, I met the owner. James in Denver
I think that's a great idea! As far as any tracking of numbers produced, Redheaded seems to have the most info. They do make it clear that none of their numbers are official. I've always felt that the flying mirror models were special as they were what the designer had in mine. The date of mfg. should be on a plate on the door sill of the drivers side. I would not mind starting a list on the single mirror cars if there's enough interest. We could do it by year, vin #, production date, color of car and interior. I feel that most of the folks that have this model appreciate it for what it is, instead of trying to change it. For those that are intrested in the values rising, what would make people more aware of the model than knowing there are a limited number available? Any interest? Ron
I would be interested for sure, but to make it worthwhile enough to get any large percentage of the remaining cars documented is going to be some work. We could just ask all the chat members to list their car as a starting point, but where do you go beyond that?I know that one of our contributors here in Dallas has made some effort in this area for the 512M, maybe we could ask him how he went about it and how far he got? I will give him a PM and see if he can post some advice. It starts to occur to me that the 1985/1986 is in fact a unique car and is much more rare than what we may have thought. If so, this would be a great asset for us owners. James, - as a start: 1986 Red/Tan ZFFSA17A2G0060447 22K miles, unmodified mecanically, Recaro Sports seating.
I agree as wll, good start. 86, red/blk 60665 ....57,000 kms...under 40,000 miles ( i think) , unmodified as well both mechanically and cosmetic.
OK! The only way I know to start is to start, so I'll start listing as we receive the info. I'll try to keep them in order by vin #. As a side note, the first double mirrors were supposed to be on #67487. Vin# Year Colors Mileage Mods. Just joined the forum and have another early TR for your registry, VIN# 61305, 30000 km, red w/ tan interior, TRX tyres/wheels, CH spec, now located in Germany. Bought the car from its long-time Swiss owner last year. Interesting to note that the car was registered in 1986 but manufactured in December 1985, according to factory records, indicating that all the chassis numbers below were also 1985 production.
Vin#---Year---Colors------Mileage---Mods.---US/EURO---Current Owner 63465--1986--Black/Tan--33,000----stock----U.S.-------James Selevan/Southern California Please note my VIN. This does raise an interesting question concerning number sequence (e.g., odd numbers only). If this is the case (my car is a 1986), then there are at least 2,732 cars (63465 - 58001) = 5464/2 = 2732 cars. Perhaps numbers were skipped by Ferrari on Mondays. Jim S.
You are under a misapprehension here. Not all cars in that chassis number range will be Testarossas. Many will be 328s, Mondials etc. Note too, that there is a difference between the US model year and the build year. For example, some 1986 model year cars will have been built in 1985. Jonathan
Looks like we're off to a good start. I'll try to update the list on a daily basis. Odd numbers were used up to75000, then I assume they used even also. The numbers were probably for all models also. It's common to build a current model in the previous year. For now I'll use the email names only, also I feel we should use the production date as the year ok? Vin# Year Colors Mileage Mods. Me and a buddy both have a neighbor (as in two cars in two different towns) that have left one of these sitting on their driveway for years, basically abandoned....if I ever see him outside I'll ask the year and vin#. Both have a single hi Aframe mounted mirror.
If you aren't scared of their dog, (or could ring their doorbell) the VIN is supposed to be on a plate on the steering column right ahead of the wheel, and you can read it from the outside. The serial number should probably be an indicator of the year, but the numbers we have so far are kind of all over the map. Also, for what little it may be worth, my #447 car came with the service warranty book for car #60667, which was apparantly sold on March 8th, 1986 by Lake Forest in Chicago. My #447 Autofax indicates that it was originally sold by a dealer in Houston, spring 1986. Somebody had tried (without much success) to remark the 667 entry to 447 to match my numbers - but you can still read 667 underneath it. I had not noticed until this thread came along and I went looking for a delivery date on my car. So, maybe 667 is out there with my books and they got switched? OR - 667 could be no more and some former owner got it's books to put with my car?
Abandoned TRs? Is this a joke? They sound like kits. Put me in touch with either or both of them and we can come to arrangements.
86 TR. ZFFSA17A0G0060141 Single lug TRX wheels, single mirror, Red/Cream And FWIW, my service records "disappeared" along the way in transit to me. Also FWIW, many autos are produced in the year before the actual model year. - My first car was a 65 Mustang 289 manual coupe, but it was produced and some were sold in 64. Sometimes known to Mustang affectionados as a 64 1/2. And again, how is this lost to history? Does not Ferrari keep production records? Or is that a big state secret?

I realize there are other sites that list TR's but, I feel that the flying mirror models from 1984 to 1986 are so special that they will be the most sought after. The more we document on this model the more people will realize just how special they are. What maybe 1450 world wide produced? How many can be left? Ron Vin# Year Colors Mileage Mods.
