Fantastic post, I don't agree 100% on all of it but I agree with your sentiments. The 355 is a modern day classic, it is showing all the correct sign's to become a collector car, even if production numbers are a touch high, a well sorted car will become very valuable in the future. IMHO

    360's will die price wise.

    I love mindless rhetoric.

I concede that certain aspects of the 355 might be considered more pleasing to the eye than the 348. But that's irrelevant to how "good" the car is. The fact is, the 355 lineup has extensive, expensive issues. The 348 does not.

And as for depreciation, I am afraid the facts tend to contradict your assertion: The 348 is worth roughly what it was 5 years ago. The 355 is worth $25 to 30K less.

All of that said, I intend to own BOTH cars!

I do agree that the 360s will plummet - Ferrari jelly-beaned these cars.

The price of all these modern cars
as 355 360 and 430 will continuosly decrease for some years. Too many cars have been produced. We can buy only if we like to drive them !!!!
And there are very nice cars to drive !!!
To make an investment, to me, the best car is the 308 fiberglass....only 712 produced !!
    And also 512bb and 328gts.

All personal opinions aside - the facts about production numbers are important : Below are fairly accurate numbers that have been published in various places:

    TOTAL WORLD 348 PRODUCTION 1989-1994 - 8,215

    348 - TB 2,895
    348 - TS 4,230
    Spiders – 1090

    Total: 8,215

    Total 355 production (1994-1999): 11,273
    GTBs: 3,938
    GTSs: 2,048
    Spiders: 2,663
    Other (Challenge, Competizione, etc.): 2,624

    Total w/std gearbox: 8,649
    Total w/F1 gearbox: 2,624

    Total 360's produced over 5 years-17,500

    Coupes Total - 10,000
    Standard Coupes - 8,500
    Challenge Stradales- 1,200
    Race Cars - 300
    Spiders - 7,500

Plainly stated - 348 production numbers rose 40% for 355's - and 213% for 360's - if you just look at Spiders it is even higher 244% and 688% :)

We all numbers can lie... but somewhere in this you will find that as time goes by "clean" cars with "good" records, etc... will bring "good" dollars.

If it is a 348 or 355 it will bring what the market will pay... Maybe we should give it to the Las Vegas odds makers to crunch all this data and gives us some input.

Funny how some cannot separate emotion from fact. Time will tell

P.S. As far as the usual banter about 348's - We all know why things were said... They had to sell 355's and people's jobs depended on this. What was he supposed to say ? Personally I prefer the looks of the 348 in every way except the tail lights.

Thanks for posting the production numbers. From those numbers, it seems that the street versions of F355s were produced in similar numbers to 348s. Actually if you take off all the race cars from the total, it will bring the number down to 8,649, which is only a tad more than 348. The reason I mentioned this is, race cars appeal to limited number of people, and you cant even title them here in the US. Also, we all know that those race cars never crash ;)

I know that US spec F355s were imported in smaller numbers relative to the 360s. I think about 45-50% of all 360s are US specs, compared to about 30% of all F355s. Anyone know the exact number of US specs F355?

"ITS THE BEST CAR IN THE WORLD " SO PRICES FOR THE 355 SPYDERS CAN ONLY GO ONE WAY AND THATS UP .

clarkson recons you would still be able to sell your ferrari after five years and recoupe most of the money lets hope he is right as iam about to invest in one my self ,but i would not pay over £50,000 for it as their are some really good examples out their with fantastic history and extremeley low milliage ,what your looking for is that old boy who has just retired and looking for some talent on a friday night ,to which he is now completley F and in need of selling it after having it for five years kept in a carcacoon in darkness for five years with just a turn over of the engine every so ofton and one revolution of the tyres every month, this is the ultimate dream but they are out their as i know i just found one! But make sure you trust that old boy that he has changed that belt every 3 years regardless of milliage you dont want a run of testarone on viagra and a ping in the band as the results could be drastic if you get my meaning ,keep the band freash and new and that good old red boy will keep you sweet.

You only live once RIDE THE DREAM!

What inevitably happens is a bunch of cars fall of the wagon... owners that don't maintain them or wreck them, that get stolen, salvaged, etc. This makes a reallygood, sorted, cared-for car ever rarer still. 2,600 355 Spiders, probably half F1's,inthe universe is not an oversupply. 10 to 20% will have gone in 10-15 years, probably 20-25% more neglected or story cars. So maybe 1,300-1,500 good cars, half in each transmission. 50% or more red or yellow. As you keep defining down subgroups of buyers for a GREAT car, you discover that there just aren't that many! I wanted a silver or blue car with low miles-- very, very small universe!

    I disagree, I don't think you'll be seeing 355's & 360 moving to Asia in big numbers:
The Chinese in particular will prefer new cars every time - too much loss of face driving a car that someone else owned. Similar in the rest of Asia too, one of the reasons for the low(ish) prices of 2nd hand F cars exported out of Asia ( to Australia for instance ).
Don't know about Russia, except there are lot's of billionaires in Moscow. I expect they buy new cars .

But I think the new wealth in Asia will put some pressure on vintage Ferrari prices - especially limited production cars - in the game of one-upmanship a new Ferrari may be cool, but anyone with the $$$ can have one just like it: whereas an older, restored Ferrari is unique thing, that shows the owner has taste, and often, no amount of money will obtain one just like it.
