    I went up to Lake Merwin, Yale and Cougar yesterday and what a roads up there. Perfect bank sweepers! Just thought the whole time, " What a great drive this would be". On the way back I took hwy 503 south and OMG! No traffic and 40 miles of insane twisties. We need to do this drive. Maybe after Cars and Coffee we could get a group together next Sat?


    Any interest in a drive up to Mt St Helens on some of the best roads around? If enough I will plan the drive.

    Mike I would definitely be up for this drive. I think I actually know of these roads you speak of and you're right, they're all incredible. I think I have a video of it somewhere.

    MY plan would be to go to cars and coffee at Bridgeport and take off around 9:00-9:30. I-5 North the Battleground exit. That alone is 30 min + Then I would think another hour to hour and half to Mt St Helens view point. I have only been as far as Cougar Reservior never the view point so someone else may know exactly how long?

    Back home to portland around 2:00ish?

    Cool sounds good. I do know GPI is doing a little drive later that evening I just found out too.

    I will get on line today and find some maps which I will bring but would like some feedback on a place for lunch up there somewhere? I have never been farther than Cougar Reservior which I hear is only 20 min from the viewpoint at Mt St Helens.


    I can tell you that you take hwy 503 North off I-5 North and it is see thru, banked, freshly paved, smooth, traffic free, gorgeous road. That road then turns into the Hwy that goes to St Helens.

    More info to follow. Glad there is some interest should be real fun

    This is a beautiful road with lots of twisties and fresh asphalt! Good scouting Mike...and thanks for putting it together! Will the "Taxi" be ready in time?

    Ok here is what I have found out so far.


    Hwy 503 North is the road to take. Thru Battleground up part the reserviors. I found a lunch spot at Cougar called Lone Fur Resort. Don't let the word resort fool you but the Lady at the Volcanic monument says the food is good. It is 40 minutes from the I-5 Battleground exit.

    I found out that the main observatory is on hwy 504 much higher North. We would have to drive all the way to Castle rock. No thank you maybe another trip.

    Once we get to Cougar I would suggest pass the resteraunt and continue for another 30 minutes to a place called Apes Caves where we can park and take pictures etc. Then back to lunch and home

    I'll be down in Orting this saterday, so Mt St Helens isnt too far away. I'll try to drag my brother down there and meet up with you guys.

    I am in. Just let me know where to be. We did a drive up to the mountain last summer with some friends. I can't believe that 28 years later and there is still very little growing up there.

    My wife is making me choose between this drive and the one with the Lambo group from my favorite place (GPI) on Saturday ending up at Giovanni's Italian in Beaverton. Since that is RIGHT down the way from our house, I feel I need to go on that one.

    I will post a link once I have it for the drive / dinner in case anyone is interested.

    Mike: You gonna gets some new stoppers before this drive to protect the rest of the public or take the Bentley instead? :)
