Yes mate I have an E36 M3 which I absolutely adore. I'm concerned about upgrading to a E46 as I've spoke to quite a few owners who have had both and say they preferred the E36 for no frills excitement. I'd be shattered if I spent $30K on top of selling my M3 to only end up with "more of the same".

I love the 3x8 shape it's just mesmerising. I'd love to take it out each weekend for a spin.

I'm a bit too fussy with my 328 which I know is crazy but what do you do?

I hate to admit it but I do like these and I didn't even put it in the poll...... I know I'll get flamed.

I looked at a few M3's a while back. The non-SMG are "rare" by E46 M3 standards.. Does not say much. But I did feel like it was quite a bit of car for the money (~55k). That said, I did not spot one in great nick. They all had repairs and were not the cleanest.

Outside of the M3, how about a CLK55?

I've been put of M3's due to the expense of repairs on the SMG gearbox.

Nice car but it doesn't fire me up as a weekend toy. It's more of a daily to me.

After not seeing any real clean examples, I started looking at the CLK55's (after being given an E500 for the week). I started seeing the "all been abused" that people mention when referring to M3's in the second hand market. I was not all that comfortable learning that they are wound pretty tight and the $ to repair when something goes wrong.

It's a BMW not a stupid Ferrari. The SMG is as reliable as anything. I did 105,000 km's in mine with zero drama. A mate of mine has done the same trouble free miles on his E46 M3.
    Great cars, especially the CSL.

    You have an E36 M3 and a 328GTS.....55k to spend on a weekend toy.....has to be a 911 IMO.

How close would 55k be to a turbo 930 in Aussie? You would be knocking on the door to one here at that money....

Bob, since I spent 6 hours driving to Cant'berra and back today, I had plenty of time to ponder....

I'd think about a 968CS - all jokes aside, Porsches are great cars, and obvously well engineered and built.

The best P-car, all round as a DD (if you must) and a weekend comp car, that I've driven is the 968CS(sorry, don't like 911s) Surely this would be a great tarmac rally toy, and having driven one on the track, a great track car as well. OK, it's not a great looker (eye of the beholder & all that), but jeez it's a great drive - and it has a bit of an edge, being a stripped out special sort of thing.

There would have to be a couple of good(non thrashed) ones about. At the right price, I'm more than a little interested myself....If only I knew a broker.

Some great advise there guys, many thanks.

Whatever I get next, would be a replacement for my M3. I have $30K to spend and should get close to $25K for mine.

I'd love to get a Porsche as 4 of my other friends have all gone down that path. '83 SC 3.0L Coupe, '84 Carrera 3.2 Coupe, 993 Carrera S and a 996 Carrera Coupe.

Older Porsches just seem over the top price wise and most have been molested severely.
I'm a real stickler for originality so spending bucket loads of money rectifying modifications is not my go. I must admit I hadn't considered a 968 so I'll look into that. I'd love a 930 but I reckon I'm 20K out for a good one. I may just save for another 12 -18 months and pull the trigger there. The only issue I've heard is that they are a bit of a pig to drive. The Turbo lag is something else. Lets face it the 328's aren't exactly the easiest cars to drive around town so I don't want two like that.

It's for that reason the XKR Jag and HSV also appeal.

With all that said, I'd love to have bought this car, it too mesmerises me like my 328 does!

Jag engines are generally fine - it's the oil leaks that are frustrating. And a well-serviced V12 Jag engine with fuel injection is generally rocket proof (great motors).
