According to Autosport, VW finds the new rules very attractive and are considering supplying engines http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/80348
Porsche obviously has vastly more heritage and reputation, but if they want maximum bang for the buck in terms of volume car sales (and to enhance VW's sporting reputation), the choice would be to go with VW.
Cool. The manufacturers exodus is reversing. As stated so many times: F1 is cyclical. At some point the manufacturers will come back.
I for one welcome our new German Ünterlords. Rumor has it that the engine will be a tad underpowered. A technical sample: Image Unavailable, Please Login
Not sure what he's babbling on about when he says "world engine" but it sounds like a lot of standardized crap to me.
Hans Stuck was at Homestead last weekend which surely means VW will be entering NASCAR, no? Either that or Stuck was at his home in Ft. Lauderdale and just wanted something to do. Those who know HJS realize he is one of nature's born talkers. RM
What if they just want to beef up their sports image? Bugatti (while cool) doesn't need a boost, Porsche perhaps and VW could certainly use it.
Based on history and the current business plan of the company, I would bet against Porsche being the badge. Just too remote, given their active avoidance of F-1.
Was speaking with someone yesterday with friends inside factory that said this is underway. And that VW is talking about a team, not just engine supply. Anyone else have updates on this?
About 2 months ago now is when I heard something similar. It was just a breath of a whisper, but there are whispers and that's a start.
From inside Porsche I hear that they have absolutely no plans whatsoever to even put their badge on an engine. Auto Union would be awesome, but Ferdinand Piech has always wanted to bring the brand VW to new heights: He already called the VW Phaeton a Phaeton when nobody wanted a VW badged luxury car and the old Borgward brand was readily available.
Porsche seems to be putting their money on LeMans rather than thinking F1. As a parent company VW, could put any name, but if Porsche is really driving a team on LeMans, would they be keen to say they are also on F1 without really being involved?
