Awesome work Paul! Those pics sure are nice. Are you going to port, polish, and flow the heads?

    Update

Took the sump off and found the rest of the broken valve spring!

The reason for removing the sump was to check out the oil pump and cam chain tensioners pads.

Can anyone confirm from these photos if i have the old type or the new type??

I think i have the old type pads and i think the new type bearing??

    Thanks

I just read thru this entire thread. Your work is awesome and inspiring. I can't wait to see the completed engine sitting in the detailed compartment.

    Nor can i wait Mark.

Bit of an update, been working on the rear engine cradle. The 348 engine cradle seams to rust quite badly on the upright strengthens, i know Daniel had to have his ones re done.

I started by having the lower part shot blasted so i could see what i was working with, as you can by the photos mine had been repaired before. All they did was cover over the old rusted parts nice !

I removed all 3 parts completely (Sorry don’t have photos) and made new upright section out if box section tube, and then welded them back in the right place. The last few photos shows the new parts in place, the frame is now at the powder coaters getting sand blasted and re coated.

    Hope you enjoy

Thought i would update this thread.

I have been working on the bottom end of the motor, i have cleaned the “pre oil filter” that attaches to the oil pump and installed new O-rings.

I have fitted 2 new bearings and new tensioners pads with the later type ones, the refitted the sump.
Not much more I can do to the motor until I get the new valve guides for the heads.

I have taken the covers of the gearbox and put fresh lock tight on the ring nuts so I hope I won’t have any issue here.

I sent the engine loom away to have all the boots and connector pins changed so will be putting that back in a few days.

I have had the engine frame back from powder coating and they have done a great job, I also have had the entire nuts bolts brackets fuel rail Etc all Re plated and again they are stunning.

I will post the photos next time.

What I have posted photos of is the front brake set up I have been working on.
The Calipers are Alcon racing 6 pot “mono blocks” , the rotors are AP floating type 378mm by 36mm wide, pads are Ferodo DS2500
I had the brackets and bells made up, as you can see they fill the wheel quite well.

Hope you enjoy and I will have some more photos in the next few days.

Small update, had made and fitted all new valve guilds, honed all the guild bores and then sent he head off to have the seats cut on a cnc valve seat cutter, see video here http://www.ultimatep.com/shopinfo_seat_profiling.asp

Just in the process of building up the heads with all new valve springs, stem seals etc. Made a tool for inserting the stem seals as they are a quite “hard” going to set the valve clearance on the bench before i fit the cylinder heads to the engine.

The body of the car is at the new paint shop, they have made all the panels fit as they should and removed all the paint, i hope to get the car back at Easter time then finally i can get on with the rebuild.

Erine! You need to stop patching your 348 and take it all apart and rebuild it. Then it won't fall apart.

Nice work Paul. What spring/shocks are you running? Is your package home brew or did someone test it?

Sorry got no photos on file, i have a few paper photos that were taken by the garage that sold the car i will try and scan them.

The car did not look to bad, yes it was a bit worn and tired but i have to admit to having the rose tinted Ferrari glasses on when i brought it. I brought it with my heart and not my head.

Hi there FB, the shocks are made by a UK company called "LEDA" and were made for me, i sent them the old shocks and they came up with this kit.

It is one of the parts i hope will work out with out to much messing about, I should have gone with the guy who did Andy hills (i think SY is going to use the same guy) he was a bit more expensive but he had a tried and tested set up.

As for being the best 348 in the UK, not so sure about that, both Andy’s car and SY car are quite special, i do want to put throttle bodies on it at some stage but have stopped myself doing it as i really need to get the car on the road.

Thank you all for the nice comments it really does help me keep motivated with the project.
All the best and i wish you all a good 2010
