Well, those critical of it obviously have a reason not to buy one, so that makes sense. Other than that, your post is pathetic. OT: The 458's back end is something i had to get used to. I'm starting to like it now. I had the same when the 599 came out, and Ferrari introduced the single taillights. I really missed the characteristic double taillights, that was something I always liked about Ferrari back ends. But now, I love the 599, especially from behind.
Hmm... It's really interesting to hear everone's thoughts. I had a closer look at one yesterday (in yellow) and I think I've worked out why I don't feel it's the prettiest derierre (words chosen for certain members who may throw their toys out of their pram).. The 355, 360 and, to some extent, the 430, all have a squat appearance from the back, i.e., your eyes (or at least mine - don't forget this is an OPINION), are drawn to both the light clusters and the exauasts sitting beneath them on either side. This, to me, makes the car look poised, aggressive and as it tends to push your eyes out to either side, wide and stable. With the 458, however, my eyes are instantly drawn to the protruding light on either side and the 3-tube central exhaust cluster, which presents a triangle balancing on its edge. The fact that there is only one light either side against the 3 tubes, unbalanced it slightly (visually). I still can't help thinking - praying mantis. Having said that, it is an absolutely beautiful piece of engineering and design to look at and I'm sure, with time, I'll grow to love it as much as it's predecessors. What amazes me most of all is that it is a form of function rather than ignorant or free design. By that I mean it will obviously have been chiselled, chopped and styled in order to make it as minimally resistant to flowing air as possible. The series is getting as close to aesthetical perfection as anything can be, almost like the evolution of fast moving animals or fish. It's lucky for us that things like intakes, scoops and grills look good - otherise we'd have super-fast cars that don't look as good as they drive. Ramble ramble ramble
I bought the F458 because it is probably the most technologically advanced Ferrari on the market. Honestly? I didn't even notice what the rear looked like when I placed the order. Its one of those one man's meat is another man's poison topic. We should do a poll!!
Interesting observation there. I love the back end, but if I were pushed for a criticism it would be that the complex shapes and mouldings make the whole of the back look a little like a big piece of vacuum formed plastic.
Well said, and I tend to agree with you. Over the last 6 months or so I've come to appreciate the 458 for what it is: the pinnacle of design in terms of melding form and function. For example, at once the intakes on the front fender above the front wheels improve performance and add aesthetic value. The 458 is a bold, fresh, innovative, visionary design. It is reflective of Ferrari's quest to always leap ahead of the competition; and in the process perhaps force some of its customer base to come into focus with Maranello's vision.
I like the front lights...a bold and forward thinking design. The front lower bumper could be more aggressive though. Not crazy about the rear.
Mark, nice car. Patience will reward those who are not enamored with the design now.....front or rear. I have no doubt the Scud/CS version of the 458 will address all the perceived problems with the original design. Just compare the front/rear views of the base 430 to the Scud/16M.
Let me just start this by saying I think the Praying Mantis is one of the most beautiful insects... I vote for two lights either side on the 458's successor and exhaust tubes either side - tubes in the middle take me back to my Boxster days. *shudder* Image Unavailable, Please Login
I find the 458 (both in pictures and in the flesh) absolutely hideous. I honestly can not find a single thing about it that can be labeled beautiful, gorgeous or any other positive adjective that is often used to describe a Ferrari. I really think it's the ugliest Ferrari of all time.
You couldn't be more wrong So you're saying this part of this car is just plain ugly? Are you serious? This car has one of the most sexy curves out there. http://img228.imageshack.us/i/fj21.jpg/ http://img440.imageshack.us/i/fj22.jpg/
