A little late, but here they are... I posted them in another thread and realized I'd never put them here where they really belong. It's hard to believe it's been over two years since the supercharger was installed. I still LOVE it. A little updated info on old discussions: 1. My 'hot restart" problem was the fuel pump, not the WUR or any of the other things we'd tried while figuring it out. Replacing the fuel pump completely eliminated the issue. 2. The Vortech head unit went back to Vortech *again* due to an oil seal that was leaking. They replaced it and bearings for free even though it was out of warranty (thanks to my mechanic, Gary Searles, for negotiating that on my behalf). It also quieted it down so all you hear in the fin whine (which is a cool sound) at idle. 3. After all the tuning and pullies and such, it's now a 350hp system, and I'm very happy there. And just as reliable as any 'plain jane' 308QV. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yes, it does look nice - especially without the reddish dryer hose shown on Nick's site for the intake air. I was looking at the dyno plot you posted on the other thread and note that the engine signs off at 6k. Why was it decided to set it up that way instead of the 7500+ of the oem motor? Seems like the boost (pulleys/whatever) could have been changed appropriately to maintain the same relative power/RPM curve as stock (though at a higher HP level.)
Are you sure that was my plot? If you look at my first post-supercharger one in post #51 in this thread, it was over 7000 before I let it stop. Lou's kit from 928 had trouble above 6000, but I haven't, except when I tried a mis-matched fuel pump. I have the XDI-2's rev limited set at 7500, and I indeed get there from time to time.
"Are you sure that was my plot?" I apologize, it was the plot on Nick Forza's site re the supercharger that I was looking at. I got confused among the posts - sorry.
Beautiful carbon work! Congratualations. My own SC has a very similar layout and works well. None of us have intercooler or water injection. I have some worries about temperature though. I measure 140degC outlet air temperature from the SC at 7000rpm 1,7barabs. I guess your temperatures are similar. I'm glad to read that you have a very reliable installation. Am I right to conclude that your driving experience shows that temperature is not a concern for this setup. Or have you made any cooling upgrades? /Niels
I've upgraded my radiator fans to dual 12-inch Haydens, and had the radiator cored/cleaned. I also added an oil cooler fan but I only use that on track days or very hot stuck-in-traffic days. All of those upgrades I'd made independent of the supercharger, and I've had no temperature issues as far as engine or water temps post-supercharger being added.
I know ... it's a no brainer ... roll the smog exemption up to '82 for Cali vehicles ... can you imagine? First the guys making supercharger kits would benefit ... and then all the parts guys .... then an entire aftermarket segment would be created 'cause we'd find all the weak points of the cars. Oops ... forgot about all the legitimate repair guys doing clean up work. Some of the countries problems are so easy to solve ... back to bed . cheers all .
Mike - Can you please give me the part number for the Hayden fans you used and for the exact make and model of your oil cooler fan? I'd like to add both to my car if I can. Thanks!
<snicker...> that's brake duct hose. We use that on the race cars. Stuff is not cheap but it takes a beating and keeps on working even in horrid conditions. You're right, its just the wrong shade of red/orange to go well under the hood. Overall, both this one and Nick's are great looking packages, but then I'm a carbon fiber-aholic. Nick does great work too but sometimes I just gotta question that boy's color schemes...?!? Rick
Hayden fans for the radiator details: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=76238 My setup with part number details is in post #5 and #6 in that thread. Hayden fan for the oil cooler details, it's a puller arrangement (pulls air in from the side scoop through the fan) and has a small on-off toggle switch I put under the dash. Tommy Cosgrove came up with this in the old FChat and I just copied his setup, but that thread appears to have been lost in a crash. It was: http://70.85.40.84/~ferrari/discus/messages/112/326878.html Here's an photo I have that shows mine tucked in there with its relay... ignore other items that don't look familiar... they're probably part of the supercharger kit. I figured out how the old references have been changed. Here's the link to Tommy Cosgrove's Oil Cooler Fan thread, and we used a Spaal: http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/112/326878.html
Has anyone done a similar supercharger install lately, and how has it worked out? BTW, mike C: geat work and good info
Mike C: I'm just sniffing around for a 308 with a supercharger. What you did was great. if you hear of one fs, pm me please.
Wow...unbelievable project. If you don't mind me asking what the totall cost was?? And did Braydan do it all??
It was all done by Scott McGehee. He flew to Alabama to install and tweak the prototype since he wanted to be able to sell a QV kit (he had installed the first one on his 2V Mondial)... but because it was a prototype, I didn't pay anywhere close to full cost for the custom parts. The Vortech supercharger unit itself was around $1700 (from www.superchargersonline.com) at the time, but then you also have hoses, fittings, and custom machined mounting brackets to fit it all in that Scott made, and I also changed out the harmonic balancer and went to electronic ignition at the same time (both of which I purchased from www.NicksForzaFerrari.com). I'm guessing it was about a $6K-$7K upgrade, but it absolutely gave new life to the car and new joy to driving it that was well worth it.
Killer idea DUDE, I'll back you all of the way. If you can do for the sickly Kalifoania what you've done for the 308's performance, it will be a no brainer. all the best, chris
