Before you jump to answer with where you live, or jump to say London, I'm conducting this survey based on a variety of factors. Not all of these might be important to you, but according to Monacle at least (which voted Munich as the best city internationally for possessing all of these factors), all of these are important for quality of living (my words not theirs).

Factors to consider include..access to city life (restaurants, art and culture) but within close reach of the countryside/fresh air, low crime rates, family friendly areas, friendly neighbourhoods etc etc.

I'd probably vote for Oxford if not for the fact the city is a little on the smaller size (but its not a million miles from London), or Tavistock/somewhere in Dorset or Devon. Personally, no where gives me the feeling I get in London, but I couldn't live there all year round.

    What would you vote for?

At the moment the best place to live is not in the UK.
Somewhere where petrol is 16p per litre, there is no tax, no crime, the weather is always warm/hot, food is subsidised, ciggies 50p per packet, car tax including MOT is £32 per year, little or no recession, an F1 circuit in your back garden, great food etc… :D

Downside beer is £2.90 a pint and instead of oak trees we have date palms :(
    Regards Nick

The Newmarket area, east of Cambridge. National Express bus to London (2 hours) 6 times a day; Epping Tube station 45 minutes away, Stansted Airport 45 minutes away. Park and Ride to Cambridge. Drive to Norwich, Bury, Ely. Stratford 2 hours, Donington Park 2 hours. Wonderful horse racing community, nice High Street, good restaurants, low crime.

Tyler Brule's criteria probably do not include whether the local speed bumps are compatible with 360CS ground clearance.......

Well if you say that the best place to live is based from earning capacity and style of living then I'd say either Surrey or Cheshire.

Well, if the crime rate is going to be a measure, then Glasgow is certainly out of the running.

    Good one Mark! :)

Good call but a bit too far East IMO. St. Neots is good, 20 miles West of Cambridge. 40 mins train ride to London, close to Cambridge and Peterborough, low crime rate, nice little market town. Stansted 45 mins away, Luton airport 35 mins. Some nice little shops and quite a few restaurants and pubs to choose from.

I wouldn't live in London if you paid me £1m a year ! We have better restaurants, better real pubs, almost zero crime, great roads where you would be extremely unlucky to be caught speeding, you can still park for nought and your car will be there when you come back to it - unlocked ! we actually know and speak to our neighbours, even go for a pint with them and don't spend our whole lives trying to out do each other..............

Why would anyone want to live in London ? it amazes me!

Wow, sounds great. But can you find a job? We have this island that Norway owns, Svalbard... No taxes, so pretty much the same thing, only that instead of sand desert, you got arctic desert. Thing is, you better find a job before moving there.
How are the house prices? And how many hours of flight from Bahrain to GB? Are there any foreigners living there..? Do you have to learn Arabic (assuming that they speak it there) or can you get through your day in English?
I'm sick of our taxes (car costs x2 to x3 what you pay in UK) and really could picture myself moving somewhere else in about 10 years... Too much stress and tension in Europe these days.
Thanks in advance for your time, Nick :)

PS. Sorry for the off topic!

Based on the opinions of my UK friends, the best place to live in the UK is actually the South of France or the better neighborhood of South Beach, Miami. The crappier neighborhoods are in Marbella :)

Of course, being so secretive, no one gets to see them!

I'm sorry, where has better restaurants than London?

Your reasons for not wanting to live in London are stupid in the extreme and centre around your stereotypical ignorance and your own personality. I mean one of your reasons for not wanting to live in London is because you like to park your car and leave it unlocked? Dear me.

London is like any large city in this country these days, it has good and bad areas.
I work from Edmonton right round thru Enfield, Barnet and as far round as Harrow.
I have been doing this for over 15 years and have witnessed a steady decline over this time.
They all have good and bad areas with Edmonton probably being worst than the rest!
My business is commercial heating and I specialise in schools......you only have to look at the ratios there to see how bad it's got immigration wise in this country.
I live in Suffolk and that is where i am staying at the moment........I absolutely loath London as far as the roughness of the majority of the inhabitants is concerned coupled to the fact that it is generally very run down and dirty where these peolple have congregated.
    My favourite part of London?
The North Circular heading North onto the M11.

Yes, of course we have the 22nd Regiment based here but as you say they are almost invisible, more discreet than secretive and not at all how you would expect them to look or behave.

Well thats very interesting, I lived in Longyearbyen and Svea for 3-4 months in 1985 and again in 1986, and the very best thing was snowmobiling! Now I live in the US have a Ferrari but the best experiences for excitement snowmobiling that far north in March and April.

I was lucky, took a Hercules aircraft there, and had sufficient space for enough booze to last a life time.

    But what a place!
We were there living with the Russians before the new Russia of today, and thanks for the memories.

    interesting question.

i travel a fair bit round the UK so get to see a lot of other areas but im always glad when i reach home - Cardiff.

its a small city - which i find is a positive.
    we have ace restaurants
    a lively nightlife
very easy access to the countryside and several seafront areas
i believe more has been invested in the shopping areas here in the last few years than anywhere else outside of London
if you like sports then this is also a place for you with the millenium stadium being smack bang in the centre of town, plus good rugby and cricket (county and test/odi) here too and the football team isnt doing bad either (though i dont support them myself)

    I vote for Surrey.

I lived in Surrey for 6 years before moving back to Australia for work. I'm always looking to head back though, because I really enjoyed the lifestyle. Also house prices here are ridiculous, as are car prices.

I was lucky enough to travel in many places in the UK, and also have a construction business just outside Marbella, in Benahavis. I'd agree that Marbella and Porto Banus are a bit too gaudy - I like something a little quieter. Benahavis also has a lot of restaurants.

I also like much less traffic. One of the reasons that I just couldnt do London any more. I heard that the average speed was down to 9mph. Crazy.

I was in the south of Spain, during peak hour, on the N340, and was lucky to see more than a handful of cars.

I guess I just want somewhere peaceful and quiet.

So if you had to live somewhere in the UK, I'd pick Surrey, but if it was an open choice, I'd take Benahavis in a heartbeat. BTW, Benahavis was named by the BC as the richest village in Europe, apparently. Heres a link:
