Thinking of getting a laser jammer to go with my Valentine 1 radar detector, but wonder if many FChatters have them and how they are working? I've searched FChat, but only a few posts. I visited Radar Roy too, but would really like to know real-world results if possible. I just can't go slow in the 430, so hope to limit tickets........so please share your experiences--thanks.

So, to avoid an infraction, you install a device that will get you a federal charge, either misdemeanor or felony? They work, but if you get caught, you'll wish you didn't install it.

Laser Jammers are legal except for certain states. It has saved me from tickets in Minnesota and Pa. I have a K40. Radar Jammers are illegal.

Art is incorrect and yes they work very well. I recommend the ones from Escort.
Currently there are no US federal laws prohibiting the use of laser jammers.
However, some states have passed their own laws against jamming police laser guns.

I have used Lidatek 'target' laser hammers - always worked brilliantly as they include actual lasers, rather than led blinders.... That's what I swear by. Not sure where to get them now though, I switch them car to car.

Ah. So you want to drive in an illegal manner, endangering us all.... with an electronic device to help you? The laws were written for you too Buster. What a stupid rationalization. Typical Florida. By the way you're breaking the law by speeding, an who, knows what else IS everybody's business. Jq.

I think that Art may be referring to FCC regulations concerning the unlawful transmission of a signal on a radio requency, which is what a radar jammer does. Radar jammers violate federal law. There is no federal law against laser jammers. Some states have specific laws against interfering with police laser. Here's the applicable CA vehicle code, for instance:

28150. (a) No vehicle shall be equipped with any device that is designed for, or is capable of, jamming, scrambling, neutralizing, disabling, or otherwise interfering with radar, laser, or any other electronic device used by a law enforcement agency to measure the speed of moving objects.

    (b) No person shall use, buy, possess, manufacture, sell, or otherwise distribute any device that is designed for jamming, scrambling, neutralizing, disabling, or otherwise interfering with radar, laser, or any other electronic device used by a law enforcement agency to measure the speed of moving objects.

    (c) Except as provided in subdivision (d), a violation of subdivision (a) or (b) is an infraction.

    (d) When a person possesses four or more devices in violation of subdivision (b), the person is guilty of a misdemeanor.

    (e) Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a person who has a valid federal license for operating the devices described in this section may transport one or more of those devices if the license is carried in the vehicle transporting the device at all times when the device is being transported.

So in CA, passive radar or laser detector is legal. But emitting or even deflecting a laser beam is illegal. But it's an infraction (ticket) if you have three of them installed. If you have four, it becomes a misdemeanor.

There was a crowd in Australia (probably a US device) who sold a parking sensor (quite legal, parking sensors) that just happened to have a lot of power, and be in the 904nm wavelength. Not designed for jamming Lidar, but accidentally does so. I think it was called Pro Park, but there are probably lots doing it now.

FWIW, I bought an Escort ZR3 in US about 10 yrs ago - still in the box, I just don't do the warp speeds any more, and if tooling along, only do it briefly. Had two laser infringements in that time - might have saved me, but was in two different cars, so one would have got me anyway.

I guess I'm lucky here in Arkansas, about 90% of cops use Ka band radars, the other 10%, most usually motorcycles or older county cars, use K band. Never seen laser in use. If it were, I'd probably consider a jammer, because by the time you detect it, your speed is usually fully read already, unless you get lucky with some splatter off another car.

Then again, if you were ever pulled over and a jammer found, regardless of legality... not a situation I would want to be in. I've been pulled over twice with my radar detector in plain sight, both times got warnings due to a clean record. I have a feeling any kind of jammer gets noticed and you may be facing a totally different temperament.

With the jammer I suggested, it can pick up laser from over a mile away, well outside of the usual range used to measure your speed, so the idea is mostly that you pick up on laser fired at other cars before you get to the scene anyway, this allowing you to reduce speed earlier. The unit I use is always on, unless it jams a signal, whereby it jams for five seconds, then switches off, thus allowing you to reduce speed quickly under jammed protection, and then the cop get a lower reading when the laser recycles. It's very difficult to spot, especially if you don't know what you are looking for, and my argument would always be that it's a garage door opener, and can the cop guarantee that his initial error reading was not just an intermittent problem, not a jam, as he did get a reading off me second time around.......... They mostly fall for it, and even if they don't, they can't really argue it very well if they don't understand what happened. The jammer has saved my licence lots of times

He won't answer you. By now he has realized that he didn't read you post very carefully. Up in P&R he hands out ***** slaps and asks if we need reading lessions under similar circumstances and with enough regularity that this must be somewhat embarrassing for him.

I'm no expert, but I think all lidars are 904nm, and all jammers will work - it's how far out they work, and whether the cop can tell he's being jammed that's important. Some boast about not generating an error message on the laser gun, but who knows - it's an escalating arms race. Radars are now pretty much the province of speed cameras only, and they are all K band. I think WA uses Ka band, and it's also the only state where radar detectors are legal.

All US detectors (from what I can tell) have X band, which is worse than useless, as it also generates most of the false readings, so get one where X band can be completely disabled.

The main thing with laser jammers to remember is that ones with laser diodes are best and most reliable, the cheaper ones use LED diodes which are not as effective nor as powerful. The best jammers will pick up on cops from farther away, enabling you to slow down before they even try to get your speed, hence, whether it generates an error or not will not be an issue, as you weren't speeding anyway having been forewarned

Once about 5 years ago a group of us met at a specific place with the purpose of testing these laser jamming devices. We had several police issued laser guns and a variety of our cars. Mostly Ferrari, Lamborghini, a couple Benzes, etc.
What we found that while the laser jammer worked very well as far as the inability for it to actually read the speed of an oncoming car. It was nearly impossible to get a reading on any of the dark colored cars like the 355, 430, or CL65. There is no front reflective point that works until it was within the range where the jammer would not work. (These are not effective at 50 meters for any car)
We spent all day proving this theory.
The point of this story is that the laser jammer would be perfect for my giant reflective truck. It's almost useless for any dark colored exotic. The light colored exotics had about 30 meters of additional distance that they could be detected. I'm not sure why that is. Yellow was worst.
One place where we thought may be a problem but we couldn't test would be an exotic with a reflective light colored front license plate.
I'm sure someone may chime in about the reflectivity of different car colors, but in a real world example we proved this.
The test was a straightaway and over an oncoming hill everywhere from 50-150.

That's my 2 cents worth on this debate.

I was referring to Federal law which applies to radar. Didn't realize the the Laser is considered differently, but I suspect a zealous prosecutor could try to make it a violation of that statue, but am not sure if it would be successful.

Thanks so much for this real world info. I would expect most laser set ups to be more than 50 meters. Is RED dark as far as your laser testing?

Red was in the middle further than dark colors.
What we tried to establish was the point at which you were screwed no matter what technology you had.
I'd say with a red Ferrari and no front license plate, the difference in the point at which you'd be screwed either way is probably marginal just because it would be very hard to get a reading.
The best use case for these is in large cars/SUVs. Of course, in those you probably don't drive as fast.

Hang on, Mike. You're interpreting your own data incorrectly.
What you're saying is a low reflecting car can approach closer to the laser before it gets a reading. That makes a jammer BETTER, as it will detect/jam a signal long before the police can get a reading. A large truck will always be WORSE than a sleek sportscar, for the same reason a C130 is more easily detected than an F117. So a detector/jammer will be MORE effective on a black Ferrari than a white SUV.

The point is was making with the dark colored exotics was that it was not possible to get a valid reading with or without the jammer until you were right on top of them.
The lighter exotics could be lasered from further away. Therefore there was a slight advantage to having the jammer.
Anything large. Light or dark was very easy to laser at any distance. Therefore there was a huge advantage to using a jammer.
I probably could explain it better with a whiteboard.

And I forgot to mention that the police issued laser guns had a very distinct message when being jammed from an oncoming car.
So they might not get a reading, but they will know something is up.
We still thought its a great addition for those who speed in large vehicles.
