5 speed, black/black, 3x,xxx miles, immaculate. Still smells new. I think I'm in love...dammit!!!! Any owners here? I'm sure
I don't own a GTS, though I do have a couple of 928s. I've been singing their praises as well. Are you going to pull the trigger?
I love my 1995 GTS . I have a few 928s and the GTS is the most comfortable long distance sports car I own. Service costs haven't been anything outrageous. Mine has like 70k miles and so far nothing but typical fluids and brakes. I did a timing belt and water pump service last year , cost was like $2k. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks for the responses, guys! Great looking car, tiara! I don't know...I doubt I'll do anything, but that doesn't mean my wheels aren't turning. The asking price is pretty high, but it really is immaculate. I don't even recall rock chips of any note. It would be a great compliment to my 348 and 993, but then again maybe I should get out of the 90's I don't think they've made the price public, so I won't divulge too much other than it is over $50k. Not many 5 speeds out there, plus the condition and relatively low mileage...I don't know. What do you guys think?
I had a black/black (with tan carpet) 1983 928S manual back in 1998. Loved the car! It will compliment what you have nicely so you get that different enough feel for driving it compared to the others. Stay in the 90's for sportscars, good time for them before they became (generally) more heavy and more computer(complicated) laden. I have 4 cars and my 1991 NSX is the best!
I sold my GT for $57K at Mecum this summer. It was an immaculate car, but not the value of a GTS. https://www.mecum.com/lot-detail.cfm?lot_id=CA0814-195112
I'd love to, but my wife told me she would commit me I would need a moment to figure out the garage situation and possibly give up (gulp) something, probably the 993, and I'd have to do some serious A/B-ing and soul searching there. Not sure if I could do that. Actually, it looks like someone has plunked down a deposit, so I doubt there is any hope anyway. I didn't expect it to hang around long, but damn, that was faaaaast!
another poster ( Jack the Lad ) was looking for a 928 here a few days ago , could he be the purchaser... his thread suggested choosing a 928 GTS as being the better choice among the 928... any well sorted 928 will serve well, let any premium go to condition

I've had my 79 for going on 17 years now and it's a really nice GT for its time. The GTS is the 928 to have though, esp if you can find a nice 95. Ditto on expensive to maintain.. if you can find the part!
Old thread new post! I've been a 928 GTS owner for 2 years. Service and maintenance costs are not high at all. I've owned a few Porsches but this car is an amazing ride. So very very capable, while being able to do 500 mile trips in complete comfort. Mines done 60miles and I'm very glad I dropped the cash on it. Congrats ! You are correct. A properly maintained 928 has fractional running costs when compared to same vintage Ferrari. More miles = more smiles Interestingly a GT3 shares a lot of synchros and bearings with the 928 transaxle. Clearly the engineers got it right !
was wondering what the OP ended up doing. I owned a '93 5 spd for 13 yerars, sold it to make room and still miss it. they are gorgeous and remarkable performers.
I just got rid of my 40k mile 86 manual at a massive loss (could have bought a brand new Sentra and lit it on fire for the money I spent trying to fix it), and I feel great. In hindsight, if I wanted to keep it I should have just send it for an engine/electrical rebuild immediately when I got it at one of the 928 specialists in CA instead of letting 4 different local garages "take a crack at it" and spend money.
Electrical could/can certainly be an issue, but I'd have to ask what problems did you have with respect to the engine? So long as it had good compression & leakdown when you bought it, and you never threw a belt, there shouldn't have been any problems at 40k or likely 140k miles...
Ryan, I am gratified that you added your "hindsight..." remarks as I was going to respond but was concerned it would seem like a swipe at you, which it certainly wouldn't be. Instead, I can offer something in the way of guidance to prospective 928 owners that may be properly cautious regarding an expensive maintenance reputation. I speak from the perspective having owned 3 variants (S4, GTS, '78 OB, all 5 spds) over the past 20 years while being fairly involved in the 928 community. I have owned perfectly maintained 928s, and recently completed a detailed refurbishment, so my experience runs the gamut. My opinion is that all 928s are very robust designed GTs. That said, lagging values for many years have led to large number of 928s that are not well maintained, or cobbled together taking shortcuts rather than proper maintenance when required. Therefore, proper due diligence pre purchase is ESSENTIAL to rewarding ownership. Like many Ferraris, including the BBi I purchased 12 years ago, a cheap (read poor/deferred maintenance) car tends to be expensive, and an expensive properly sorted/maintained example will end up being the bargain. Paying one of the established 928 experts to bring a 928 up to speed can be quite expensive relative to the price of the car. That said, a properly sorted 928 is one of the great driving/owning experiences an enthusiast can have. Ryan's experience is certainly not isolated, unfortunately. I am sorry that his ownership experience was sour, but I do believe it can be avoided following general prepurchase practices. No matter how much a buyer likes a car, unless they are confident that there are few if any unknowns, walk away and find a better example. Patience pays off. All the best, William
Thank you for sharing your experience and the advice. Can you tell me difference between the S4 and the GTS, driving wise? Do they feel very different? Which one do you recommend for someone who is planning to keep the car for a very long time and drive it just 3000 miles per year?
