I have always been an admirer of this car, and its not everyday you see one on the market with under 1,000 miles. Price seems crazy but you never know these days... maybe the color has something to do with it? Here is the lisitng: 1989 Ferrari 328 GTS For Sale
Well, as I have written many times: on the contrary, it is "almost everyday" that you see 328 with less than 1.000 miles on the odo: MANY 328s, mainly 1989, were "put on the shelves" brand new with only the delivery miles on the odometer. The recent rise in values explains that some of these "new old stock" cars are now put up for sale: should you fancy one, there are two for sale in Europe at the moment. Rgds
The funny thing is if you bought a brand new one in 1989 for 100k and sold it today for 300k you actually didn't make any money. Between maintenance, insurance, non-op status and inflation you would be lucky to break even.
We have been doing the calculation with european prices: a brand new 328 sold for 430.000 francs (GTB) or 440.000 francs (GTS) in 1988, this "dry", i.e without any option, which is equivalent to 115.000 euros today. The two "delivery miles only" that are for sale in Germany are asking 210.000 euros. But what I was trying to say is that more than a hundred, and I am not exagerating, 1989 328s were stored "brand new" with only the delivery miles on the odo. We will see more of these in the future. more thsan hundres you see? really? That means that, from a reareness pov, the car WITH miles on it will be the most sought after
The cars began to be put "on the shelves" brand new at the death of Enzo Ferrari in August 1988. There were 334 GTBs and 1548 GTSs produced form Jan 1st to Dec 31st 1988, and 249 GTBs / 1089 GTSs produced in 1989. That makes about 350 GTBs and 2200 GTS from August 1988 to September 1989, and yes, at least a hundred of these were put on the shelves, perhaps even much more. I have a list of "delivery miles only" 328s seen during the last years (for instance, 82112, a GTB, with only the "delivery miles" (a hundred miles) on the clock, sold here in Paris in 2011) and believe me, we will see some more in the months/year to come. I know of at least two , in Houston alone, that were "put away" as described. Everyone knew it was the end of the line, for the 328. That, together with Enzo's passing, the market went nuts. Kind of like now!!! The other car I have seen here personally was black/tan, so this yellow one is a second one. I work now in the Woodlands, if anyone wants me to go over and kick a tire or something! I'm sure a test drive is out of the question! For that money, I'd go the opposite direction and buy a new Lamborghini..
That tells me these low mileage 328's aren't that rare. If you buy one for 325k you better plan on keeping it for life.
And there are still others that we don't know nothing about, mate...Because they have been hidden away from our prying eyes. Hopefully with the raise in values, they will again see the light. Rgds
But if it isn't so rare that HUNDREDS were parked (out of only several more HUNDREDS made) then I find it a bit harder to justify the elevated price... Silly really and what a shame to just park the car for life to maintain the high "value". Such a sweet car to drive that they wouldn't enjoy it. Lucky for those with enough means to buy two - park one for "investment" and drive the wheels off the other.
I drove 82094 in November 2012 just after she had been "recommissioned" (stayed without been driven for eight years); she had exactly 5.000 miles on the odo and was just like brand new, still smelling new leather. Pristine overall, except slightly bent rocker panels at the point where the jack goes (usual). Drove very nicely, too: smooth as silk. These cars are nice when "brand new": if I had one, i would drive her, no question about it. BTW, that 82094 was Giallo (yellow) / Black leather / black carpets, just like the one discussed here. Asked price was...54.000 euros, which was about 10% above the top bracket of the market. The friend who was thinking of buying her and asked me to go with him didn't buy the car: he countered the asked price but his offer was too low, so the seller said "thanks, but no thanks'". Rgds
