It looks worse than it really is. The engine is perfectly fine, as is the exhaust. The light melted as did the grill, bubbled the side engine panel, bumper and paint on the decklid. The fire was put out extremely quick. The engine lid bubble a little but could probably be sanded and re-coated.
Double check your air lid bolts from time to time. They do loosen up with the carbon lids.
That's what happened with this. Not even one lap around, the driver noticed the rear air lid flapping. Then what we believe happened was the air filter element flew out and landed on the exhaust, catching fire. You can clearly see inside the engine bay where the element was burned the contents of the car, rather than the car catching fire itself. No structure of anything major was ruined. The fender paint is still perfect, just the rear decklid and bumper suffered a scorching.
It was very sad seeing that car loaded onto a flat bed.

I think he means one of the carbon fiber air intake filter housings that sit above the exhaust.

Unfortunate, because once the actual estimates come in, it will be a much larger bill than one thinks...much can be hidden, until the bumper cover comes off and other items inspected. Between the repairs and once diminished value is taken into account, this is probably an $80k hit to the insurance company.

Yes, the driver's side carbon air lid.

After all the fire retardant was washed away. The damage wasn't too extensive considering there was a fire. The fire was the air filter element burning away on the exhaust. The car still runs fine, there is not even heat damage on the exhaust. The grill, rear driver's lights, driver's engine panel, deck lid paint and bumper didn't fare as well.

I'm sure it will be at premiere soon enough and back on the road.

I've seen this CS in the Valley somewhere. The License plate looks familiar. Fwiw.
I didn't think insurance covered you on the racetrack?

Why don't you just post his address and telephone number too?

The car is not that bad. It runs fine and it's only cosmetics on the grill, bumper, lid, lights, airbox lid, engine panel. The suffered slight bubbling on a tad of the carbon in that corner. Otherwise there is no internal damage at all.

If you look at the pic you can see how the air filter element sat in the lower section of the bumper and burned up. It looks worse because it had 3 canisters of fire retardant sprayed at it. It was more of a quick flash burn rather than one that lingered on. It was out in under 10 seconds.

    And
No he will not be selling it. That is he dream car like many of us. He's devastated as we would be and she's probably on her way to premiere this week to get her butt back in shape.

I'm sure that car will be better than ever in no time. Doesn't look like anything that can't be sorted relatively easily.

yep, very true. some bloke was trying to keep up with me through the himalayas and ended up "landscaping" and whacked his CS against a pole. actual damage was worse then it looked when the bill came in.
