Great post. I would also like to know if there is a polish to help bring back the shine. I don't think my tubi has been touched all this time.

You can clean that Tubi up a treat Robb. See this pic of my cats that I restored the finish on.

Used Vinegar to remove rust and scrubbed with a soft steel wool. Then used a chemical metal cleaner and polished it up with a metal buffing wheel and compound.

Great job, Elliot! But how can we minimize degradation of the finish over time?

I was told to spray a thin film of oil like WD40 on the cats, take it for a long HWY drive to get lots of temp into them and they will keep a nice golden glow. I did just that and they look amazing still. Not sure how long it will hold up, however it should be good for quite some time.

Thanks, Elliot. That's interesting and worth at least trying. I can see where cooking the solvents out of something like WD40 might leave behind a protective barrier. Now if only we could find someone installing a brand new exhaust to test the theory for us... ;)

Look's nice Robb, you'll love it. The Capristo at full noise is awesome.

That was a Tubi evolution in my car when we went for a spin.

    That was the upgraded bearing!

But the Challenge doesn't punish me in return, Tim. That piece of drama happened on the last session of the third and final day at WGI three years ago. Same with the alternator I destroyed on the final session of a two-day event at Daytona last April.

I once had my upper right angle coolant hose split on me at Watkins Glen on the last session before lunch. My tech replaced it over lunch and I was out again at 1:00

The only time my F355 Challenge was put back on the trailer before the end of a track event was when this weld cracked on the oil cooler. I was spraying oil all over my left rear wheel. It was repaired back at the shop.

I had all my coolant hoses and oil and fuel lines replaced at its major service last year.

    And a Couple weeks later...

We are back on track after replacing the bearing seal directly under the horse plate so that was good luck. The screw holding it in was also slightly loose so all is good now. Thanks to my local independent for the house-call. It's been crazy busy with work on the challenge car and several trips for work.

So after taking care of the leak, we pressed-on with the Capristo install. :D

Then attach the bottom clamp on the bypass.

Then add the bypass valve back in. Tighten the bolts some so that the valve is flush so you can adjust cats and fine-tune.

Double check that the bypass valve fits through the top of the heat shield before proceeding so that you don't have any misalignments to redo later...

Check the fit on the cats and clamps. If not fitting flush, you need to adjust the front of the cats matching up with the headers so that the rear of the cats mate flush with the clamp to the muffler. :)

You may need to apply penetrating oil to the cat / header nuts to loosen them up for adjusting and fine tuning the alignment.

Once the cat is adjusted to be flush, then install the v-band clamp first and tighten it all the way. Make sure the two halves of the clamp at the front of the cat are parallel. Then tighten the bolts at the front of the cat all the way.

Before putting on the rest of the shielding and bumper, start the car up and check for leaks at front of the cat, rear of the cat and bypass with your hand.

    Check the bumper alignment.

Once confirmed for proper spacing, you can tighten the hanger bolts and put on the lower heat shield.

The capristo is a larger muffler so it will brush against the lower heat shield unlike the tubi or stock muffler that have air space between. I'm not sure why Capristo needed to max out the space in this area, but that may be one reason people have trouble with heat build-up.

It is likely that my challenge grill will go back on the car to keep the heat down with the Capristo... I don't think it is wise to run a Capristo in warm climates with the solid grill. Glad it is winter here in AZ.

Then in reverse order from the removal,

    Put the bumper back on

    Light connections

    Reinstall rear inner fenders

    Reconnecting heat shields

    Reinstall top heat shield

    Reinstall air boxes.
