+1 Gizzi, My fuel pump grommets were falling to pieces after 15 years and that may have been from the car sitting for 7 of those years. The engine mounts were changed to late 575 later type as the engine would contact the rack under hard acceleration and the vibration could be felt through the steering wheel!

Thank you both for the advice and info.

My 612 is in for service now and when it's ready I will trade the 456 for it and likely address these issues on a pre-emptive basis.

My 456 was my dream car at the time and when I replaced her, I went over the car to refresh it from head to toe before I tucked it away to come out only sparingly.

As a result of all the time spent on her, she really drives better than ever before and continues to be a precious favorite, akin to child on whose health no expense can be spared.

I will definitely attend to these items- Thanks again

Apparently Tom Walkinshaw wanted to buy a 456 as a daily driver
    Quote
"When Tom Walkinshaw decided he might like to own a Ferrari 456 GT for day-to-day driving, somehow it didn’t seem right for someone at the heart of the British car and motor racing industries to drive an Italian front-engined coupé." Shame in a way

Yes Gizzi, Your right I do have to much time on my hands.

Ok, yes, you really must have too much time on your hands, lucky you! :D

That's basically our "Morning Post" or "New York Times". "Helsingin Sanomat" stands for "The Helsinki News" so I could not have missed it.

What the owner there is basically saying is that he got the car to replace a previous Porsche 911 when they got kids as the 456GT rear seat nicely seats two kids.

And the title is roughly "The usual family Ferrari? A sports car as a sensible investment?"

Which I agree fully! :) except that he got that car already in 2012 and I would say the prices in Europe hit rock bottom last winter and. I bought mine in the last minute, in April 2015.

And he is reasoning (just like. I did) that it did not cost more than an average new Toyota would cost in Finland, even if we still have to pay ca. €15-20k taxes for the import. But the value will not drop, so it's not money lost, if you keep and maintain them as you should. ;)

    Cheers,

    Pekka T.

Ps. Oh, and if you still have too much time, you can browse that archive "Autotallien aarteet" (the garage treasures) and find also my white V12 OTS E-type in there. ;)

    Hi Pekka
Fantastic thanks for the interpretation. I found the article just googling Ferrari 456 in the news.
I intended this thread to cover 456s internationally so thank again for you help. I will have a look for your E-type
    Cheers

Tuesday was magic day, valve guides sorted, 575 engine mounts fitted, fuel pump mounts changed, A/C regassed, rear spheres changed, a new alternator and battery and looking resplendent with a freshly repaired and painted frount bumper, my 456M is finally home.

It was like picking up the car for the very first time, and I was just as nervous. With the company of a good friend for part of the way made for a memorable 2.5 hour drive.

I love how these V12s the flexibility in traffic is amazing and relaxing. The freeway performance is another world and for me the engine does seem smoother, quieter and seems quicker.
And to top it off yesterday was my birthday!

Graeme- She probably is smoother and faster with the valves all sealed and a fresh set of belts and cam timing done. Plus the new style intake manifold gaskets. Enjoy driving her. The improved motor mounts also dampen things quite a bit, so that is helping, too. Plus every time you buy her things or fix her up, she will be happier.

Graeme, sorry but I didn't read all 16 pages of your thread and am curious if the valve guide wear was actually measured, or it was one of those "oh sh*t; I can't believe how bad this is" determinations and all were changed? FWIW, my 550's new guides came from CHE also.

Taz she definitely happier and almost fells more mature if I can use that expression, the freeway running is different in that she doesn't need as much throttle modulation going up and down hill even more relaxed.

The different inlet manifold gaskets, what was the change and what difference is ther if any to the way it works?

John, My car drew the short straw with valve guides with 5 badly leaking oil on the left head, all with only 28,000ks or 16 k miles.
In effect the short story is just before I bought the car it's exhaust smoke was blamed on an overfilled oil tank , which was true as oil was running out of air filter! A full cam belt and oil change was done before I collected the car.
The PPI identified it as such and in good faith I accepted that.
I ran the car for probably two months but it was using oil and also one day after a spirited run I stopped at an intersection and the car was engulfed in blue smoke.
This confirmed what my experience told be and from the reasurch it was more than residual oil in the breather and the guides were leaking. Interesting it wasn't until the inlet manifold was removed a horoscope inspection found the accumulated carbon and wet oil.

Graeme- The new intake manifold gaskets are metal with a rubber-like surround. The old ones were paper gasket material that tended to tear really badly and than not seal well. My manifold bolts were retorqued every year and the gaskets still came apart.

That may also account for an odd idle and sound if the manifold was leaking air, as it has a different nicer idle now.

Affirmative, a rough idle could be a symptom of a leaking intake manifold gasket.

Hi from spain and Sorry for my english level...

The price is perfect and the colour is the Best for these car. In Spain you could buy One about 25-30K euros. Now the price is going up to 40-45K. In my opinion these Red 456 is perfect for the price and colour.

Ugly, but it would solve the non functioning aircon, and the wind noise from the windows not sealing correctly...
