Mine buzzed too. For me it's the shifter barely touching the gate. I haven't been under it to adjust the linkage so it was easier to loosen & shift the gate a smidge.

The diagram helps a lot guys! No 10 in the diagram, its the culprit.. The ball fits inside it. Cut some shim to expand it as it slides through No9. Ill tell you its NOT easy to get the shim right. You will need quite a few practice runs at it. Thats the core issue. Also do keep in mind the lever touching the gate, however once No 10 is firm it wont even matter if the lever does touch the gate. Had my car out this morning.... pure bliss and was listening to my lever at all rpm since i came across this post!!

your solution seems to have worked.. but im having a hard time visualizing what you did..? you're cutting a piece of metal and sticking it in between #9 and #10..?

do you approach this from under the car or from inside..?

maybe if you could illustrate it on the diagram and repost it..

Remove the unit from the car. Dismantle, cut small shim to fit inside No10. This will expand bush so its tighter fit in No9. I guess you have to do it to know. I truly doubt anyone is as mad as i but you never know. I spent ages working this out since i wanted my lever silent.. Not another sole will have taken this to this level. Im prepared to be flamed but im telling you guys you wont solve this without it.
its a known annoyance with the stick cars and 99.9% of people just live with it. Not me thats all i know.

Turns out some dude from down under has it solved. No10 is really a hit and miss size... order ten of them, they are all loose. Thats the issue. Ive had this thing apart a thousand times. No rest till it was fixed. I recall doing my 3km Monday night running with my dog thinking the whole time on how to fix this. My 355 has perfect heating,ac,not a spot of oil on the floor and today i did the kamikaze glass coat. Yummy!!

Sorry Andy but i'm not sure this is gonna help me.
Shimming sounds very makeshift to me.

    Howard,

It's not makeshift at all. What he is explaining is a great way to solve your problem. All parts have manufacturing tolerances and that is probably the culprit along with wear.

A lot of effort to do this
My new number 10 was a very tight fit on the ball at the end of the gear lever
There was very little space for a shim when number 10 was fitted into number 9 from what i can remember

The new number 10 is a tight fit on the ball. That's not the issue. The issue is the 2-6 thousands of an inch free play between 10 and 9. I knew this would be hard to explain and i even thought about not getting involved in this thread but it got the better of me and i wanted to help out.

    I understand you Andy
    Don't get all miffed off

Number 10 should not need shimming...not in my case anyways...the WSM makes no mention of shimming.
The gear lever buzzes against the chrome shift gate in 3rd gear at high revs sometimes.
This can be adjusted out I presume by adjusting the connecting rod under the car a fraction.

    No

    It's makeshift.
Has to be other way of adjusting out the buzz.

Shift gate is held in place with the 4 chrome screws.
How to shift the gate and still have those screws sit squarely in the countersunk holes?

The lever buzzes against the shift plate because the lever is vibrating due to the free play in that bush. As far as i know there is no way to adjust that out. I have measured at least a dozen of these, be it genuine or other. That's the root of the problem. No free play, no buzzing. These were known to buzz from brand new.

Just trying to help mate. You can replace everything in there as many times as you can afford
Maybe it will buzz in some other gear or rev range but it will buzz.

all this about the free play between #10-9 makes sense

however Cuneo posted on page 1 that he had his tech regrease everything inside and it's been perfect last 4 years. no parts replaced nor shims fabricated?

How do you get out the assembly? Bolts from below? I am interested in purchasing a 97 355 and its gear shift sings like a ratty bird at about 6000

At some point in the cars life it will buzz. The assembly is removed from inside the car, however there are bolts from underneath plus the linkage rod and a rubber dust boot. This is after the aero is removed from under car.

    That's true
Hard to know what's to be doing

Take apart and regrease or shim the bush or both?

Why do people who clearly don't have a clue always question people who clearly do on here!

A man has gone out of his way a number of times on this thread now to clarify how to resolve the matter, based on first hand experience, he has fully explained the problem and provided a simple solution.

Actually give his solution a try before calling him out on it.

Cheers Paul. Kind words. Weather people believe it or not it does fix the problem that the car will have happen at some point in its life. It turns out in the end to be basically one of the cheapest repairs you can do on the car if you are handy with a wrench and don't mind getting dirty. cheers lads.
