I am not sure if you have instagram but if you do take a look at my page @robert_mitchell I have posted quite a bit there about the 488 so far. I will post here after today when I take the car to the Nordschleife. I have been waiting to do that before I make my final and full impression of the car. Sure its only been 4 days so far but I have run it in every condition and am just about to hit 1000KM. Full throttle out of the showroom and haven't stopped yet.
Which is exactly what many F430 owner were saying about the 458 when it was first launched. Too smooth, too refined, sounds like crap, no gearstick, no drama, no soul etc, etc.
Well, the 488 would never sound as glorious as the 458 (which sounds much better than the 430 anyway), but it doesn't sound that bad either, especially for a turbocharged engine.
I don't understand why people try to force their own beliefs over others. Some people like the 488, some people don't. I particularly like everything about the car but not the sound and the unrefined side vents. Its engine tone throughout the Rev range is boring to me compared to other v8 Ferraris such as the 355,360,430,458. I have a 458 italia and a 430 spider and I think my spider sounds better. To some of us it has nothing to do with accepting change and random people in the internet will not change that. Nonetheless the 488 is a great car and I still will consider one in the future
Sure, to some it is that way. I don't think anyone is forcing anyone to like the sound of the car. It sounds different. I think that has been said about three million times at this point. I'm looking forward to how she sounds on the track though. I am enjoying the sound she makes.
Lesia44 your comments come across as trolling Instead of commenting on the cars you just want to wind people up
If you keep it real: 488 is a beautiful car. Super fast/quick. A Ferrari. Common who would not want one. Don't be jealous or hate. I have a scud which is awesome but the 488 is much quicker. At the end of the day these cars are about performance. 488 is amazing.
EXACTLY!!! I suspect he must be an attorney in his "real life," assuming he actually has one of those.....
I was driving a 458 since 2010 and it was the best sports car I'd ever driven. After 5 years and 2 458's I was sick of it though and ready for something new. The roads where I live in Pennsylvania are a mess so I passed on the 458 Special and Special A because I hated the sound of rocks hitting the underside of my 360 CS. The 488 came just in time for me and I really like it so far after 2 months. After my first 2 or 3 drives I wasn't so sure. You have to drive it completely different then the 458 and it took some getting used to. Do I wish Ferrari did a mid engined 5 Liter NA V8 or V12 with 10,000 RPM redline and 650 plus HP absolutely. You could blame the Progressive liberal governments for not getting that. Twin turbos and 670 HP is about as good as were going to get. BTW I'm getting less MPG in my 488 then my 458 so I guess they'll have go after the cows next.
one big problem: sales of 488 would drop massively if you could buy regular Ferrari with NA engine on the rear axle
The main advantage of going turbo is to save $$$$$ in engine R&D, not MPG. The next and next and next models will be extra extra and extra boost with the same engine.
Oh you sensitive soul. Let me know when you're on the thread next and I'll just say comforting stuff.
No, the main advantage of going with turbo is keeping up with the opposition. If they didn't everyone would be moaning that they've fallen behind the performance curve.
You keep saying this but I don't think that's true. How do you know they couldn't "keep up" with an NA engine? As jim g stated, its mainly due to cO2 emissions "forced" upon them by the government. Ferrari have said, on more than one occasion, that they do not like turbos. I'm willing to bet if Ferrari had it their way, the 488 would be NA. "We don't like the turbo," said the man with the Italian accent." Why Ferrari engineers don't like turbos
It's not the CO2 too. If it is, then V12 would have gone turbo too. They still remain V12 because there is not much competition in V12 range. Ferrari needs huge investment in engine to compete with V8 turbo competitors if using NA engine. But if we look at reality, MP4 was much faster than 458 when launched, but then it suffered so bad. 0-200 for 1 second faster is not really the key here, we want more passion. I think half the passion is in the sound.
I love natural aspiration. Still, I don't bemoan turbo evolution. It is part of the Ferrari line. It's worth remembering that two of the greatest Ferrari's of all time are twin turbos (288 GTO and F40), not to mention F1 influence. Hardly poor lineage.
2 of the greatest are turbo, BUT THE REST ARE NA. And all successors after F40 never used turbo anymore. I hope 488's successor too, so I can start to buy a new car again.
But it is the CO2. They are required to lower emissions by 3% per year through 2021. So by this gradual reduction they are able to keep the V12 longer....its not necessary to change it yet. Going turbo on the V8's first they're able to meet the 3% reduction per year. And reading the article, I'm not so sure the V12 will ever be turbo. I like passion and sound too. ....not a fan of turbos. http://europe.autonews.com/article/20140624/ANE/140629961/ferrari-plans-20-co2-cut-by-2021 "Dini said Ferrari would count on hybrid solutions to cut fuel use and emissions on V-12 engines, which are currently found in its top-of-the-range F12 Berlinetta and FF models. Dini said turbos are not a good solution for Ferraris V-12s because four turbo units would be needed to achieve the required improvements. This would take up too much space and create too much heat in the engine compartment."
