I have finally decided to show the members of Fchat that I am quite shallow. Several months ago I posted a thread entitled "Too much technology." In it I highlighted what was possible in regards to the technology available to alter motor sound. EVO even had an article on it after I had posted my thoughts. Virtually no one commented on my thoughts and invited conversation about this topic. Now, you guys are all over it. I only thought it was at my local Ferrari dealer where I received no respect! Enjoy your discussion... without me! LOL Best
68 decibels for 2020 without exhaust valves ! This is the new Européan decisions ! Such a system should be generalized. Welcome to the new order...
Hi Randy, I only hang out in the 458 section. You mean people actually post interesting and thought provoking stuff in other sections? LOL
BMW Z4 also has a pipe from the air filter to the cabin to transfer some of the intake sound inside. It is quite well damped but of course you can take some of that out I guess what that shows is there is a need for at least some cool sounds.
I can't help but think of these when I hear "sound generator".... Parts by Mattel? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MC0dK42wOOA
I do not understand what all the fuss is about. No fake sound is being generated. Just like the Porsche with their "Sound Symposer" they are merely helping the engine's natural sound enter the cabin. This, to my eyes, is no more fake than lowering your car's window...
Usual uproar on Ferrarichat, as if Ferrari put speakers under the hood playing recorded 458 Speciale sound. It's just a resonating membrane in a pipe... You think these aftermarket tuned exhausts promising "F1 sound" function any differently? By the way, the F12tdf appears to have a pair of these things as well... http://www.eurospares.co.uk/userImages/244/Large/244_013.gif
If Ferrari were smart, they would: 1) Attach microphones to Carlo's car. 2) Record sound clips during various acceleration/deceleration cycles. 3) Embed loudspeakers into the 488's body panels. 4) Programatically match the acceleration/deceleration to the recorded sound clips. 5) Play them LOUDLY while the 488 is being driven. Problem solved.
What is part 30 supposed to tell us? Do you have some documentation that states what part 30 is? I have no idea what part 30 is.
For those that are actually wondering what this is and where it is; https://ferrparts.com/diagrams/488-gtb/intercooler-017#033 Ferrari has similar system on the F12TDF and several other Ferraris including the 599GTO. It's a resonator to tune the sound and feed it into certain places. It's nothing new and it does not "fake" sound at all, it is tuning the sound. The parts translation from Ferrari has never been great and it's not just the parts, sometimes it's the names of the cars themselves. Anyone with an original 430 scuderia window sticker can see the car referred to as a "F430 light Pista"
So we went from NOT needing car radios ---> to artificial tunning of sound? Like a musician needing auto tune /pitch correction?
Maybe "fake" sound is too harsh. How about "phony" sound? I bet Enzo is shaking his head in disbelief. Why would Ferrari do this? They must have been concerned about the exhaust sound?
Mentioned this when car was first released. The use of post-filtered air is risky IMO as any dry rot or lose clamp or leaky diaphragm will suck unfiltered air directly into the motor - not good and you likely will never be aware of it until eventual compression loss. I believe earlier models use pre filtered air from the air box so you can hear unaided intake roar more clearly and unaided. The diaphragm manipulates the sound as opposed to just hearing the natural sound in a well insulated cabin. I'd say 50% cheating. Certainly a must on a turbo engine.
TRUE! I remember this one A friend got a second hand Z4 and I had read about the tube with 2 sponges inside. We tried removing just one, and then both to see how it affected the engine noise in the cabin, and he ended up preferring it with one piece of sponge removed (with both gone, the sound was a fair bit louder, but with both in it was a bit too muted for his taste.
LOL. I would agree. But the OP states its pumping in sound, everyone starts to comment. He could have said look at part 36. Ferrari is adjusting your speedometer. I'm just asking where is part 30 defined. You did notice Ferrari is limiting the speed using the fammis part seen in part 57.
Well they could just make the cockpit walls thinner and you could hear the engine better, but you would also hear road noise.
