Why does the GTO have fat wheels on it? Looks silly with the wheels sticking out from the body.

250GTO 3387GT is said to have been rebodied (from Bluemel and Pritchard GTO books) in the '70s in the ownership of Stephen Griswold before Ron Finger owned it. If so I wonder who rebodied it?

Wayne Sparling received 0802 on 2 June 1966 and converted it from RHD to LHD with a body similar to an ATS Coupé. An Oldsmobile or Buick V8 engine was fitted.
In August 1978 the car was sent back to Sparling for a complete restoration as an SP using a V6 engine from a front engined Dino sports car 0778, and converted the car back to RHD. From 2008 onward 0802 underwent a total ground up restoration at Mauro Baldi's Protauto in Sorbara near Modena, completed October 2010.

Ok can anyone explicate the mysteries histories of 802 in the mid- 1960's for me please? From Barchetta:

    6. - Wayne Sparling, Alva, FL, USA
    6. - converted to LHD Coupe by Sparling with a Buick alloy V8 installed
    6. - Barbara Howe, USA

What happened here and who is Barbra Howe????

You may want to use other sources.

Susan Barbara Howe of Greenwich/CT bought it from Chinetti in 1964. Sent it to Sparling 2 June 1966 for conversion. November 1973 Howe sold it back to Chinetti. who paid US$ 1'650. Sparling did not own the car. He worked on it.

Other sources, of course. So who was Barbara Howe and what made her want a right hand drive race car, converted to a left hand drive street car? Interesting person I would think.

Griswold had the car from about 1970 until 1979, when he sold it to Mark W. DeFriece of Annapolis, MD.

Interesting but the rear wheels were definitely over width in that photo. I guess as cars get old people try to make them faster ...

In his book Starting Grid to Checkered Flag, Paul Frere devotes five and a half pages to the 12 Hours of Reims in 1958. It began with a LeMans start at midnight on Saturday, 5 July and ended at noon on Sunday. Frere and Oliver Gendebien were driving 0677GT (#64), the same TdF that they won with in 1957. The above 2 liter class had 14 entries. Eleven were TdFs. During the race, Dan Gurney was teamed with Andre Guelfi and Willy Mairesse with Jean Blaton (Beurlys) in two of the other TdFs.

0677GT's generator ceased to function during Gendebien's first turn and they were forced to swap batteries several times. Then, at about 10AM something shattered the windshield (tempered glass, not laminated safety glass) and Frere pitted to have the remains of the windshield removed. The rear window also had to be removed to improve air flow and then the headliner because it was filling with air and pressing on Frere's helmet.

While this was happening, Mairesse, in 0969GT (#84), was on the same lap as Frere and slowly catching him. But Mairesse developed a rear end problem and finished second. The first photo below, attributed to "Photo VB, Brussels" in the book, shows Gendebien sitting inside the window of 0677 after the race. Note the large star on the trunk.

The next photo is of 0969 during the race. It is one of 3 vintage photos on the barchetta site (250 GT s/n 0969GT).

Who took the second photo and what does the star indicate?

Bang and Carrera scale models of #84 both have a red star on the rear. Three weeks later at the 3 Hours of Auvergne, 0677 had the same star (yellow on the red trunk) but 0969 had no star. At that race, Gendebien had the pole and finished 2nd OA behind Innes Ireland in a Lotus X1. Mairesse finished 3rd OA and 2nd in class. For the LeMans start, Maurice Trintignant in another TdF was 2nd and Mairesse in 0969 was 3rd. This is a 16 minute movie of the race.

I have searched this thread for instances of "star" and queried Ted Walker with no reply. Revs Institute has some great shots by Albert R. Bochroch and George Phillips but they don't include any of 0969.
    https://revslib.stanford.edu/?omit_keys%5B%5D=q&omit_keys%5B%5D=search_field&omit_keys%5B%5D=qt&omit_keys%5B%5D=page&page=7&per_page=20&q=Reims+1958

It isn't by Pete Coltrin or Geoff Goddard. Jesse Alexander told me "I didn't photograph any white Ferraris." The Jacques Swatters Collection had other photos of 0969 since it was part of Ecurie Francorchamps but I have not found who currently has that collection. All theories and suggestions are welcome. If all else fails, I'll create one with Photoshop. I have all of the necessary starting starting images.

    Thanks,
    Jeff
