the mid to late biturbos, SI, 2.24, SPYDER ...etc are nice cars that had to survive the reputations of the carbed model...a disaster i think a safe buy today and lot of car for the money the I engine pulls stronger than aspected also
Agree, I have to say that I never drove a carbed one nor I owned one so I haven't a direct experience, but at the time (I'm old enough to remember very well when the Biturbo was introduced on the market, in 1981...) the carbed cars were a real disaster. After a year or two the biggest problems were fixed (MABC, fire, turbos), but it was just in 1987 with the fuel injectec models (that were intercooled and had watercooled turbos) that the car became reliable, pleasant to drive and all the problems disappeared, including the problematic hot start, then completely solved. I have to say that the "I" model is a fantastic car, easy to drive, comfortable, powerful, with a good sound, very driveable and reliabe: at least until this moment! I really didn't believe that: I got the car as it's a Zagato and a Maserati cabriolet too, but I didn't know it was such a pleasant and good car. Correct: a lot of car for that money. ciao
Agreed. You'll surprise a LOT of other cars while driving the SYPDER. They barely hook up with the factory tire width. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks, its a 2.8 litre car with the 3 valve motor. Everything's been converted to Euro spec with the later IE additions and 222SR hood. Right now it has a custom exhaust and no cats.
Ah, ok, now I understand. You have a car like mine, but with the later front lights (1991 and later four valves serie) and later body paint radiator grill. I think that If you want, you can convert to the correct front lights with low money (the front lights are the Fiat 127 ones). I don't know if your car has to have the power steering or not. In 1988 spyder had the first 1981 model bumpers, the single exhaust on the right side and no power steering. I don't know how was the 1989, if it was like my one or like the 1988 model. I think it had the big bumpers and the two exhaust but without the power steering. You have 4 valves rims too ciao Image Unavailable, Please Login
89's have power steering and quad exhausts. I have a few sets of 3 valve wheels but the 4 Valve wheels are very unique in the states. The European cars like the one in the brochure have bigger rounded off lights, and a different bezel around them. I have the pieces but I'm going to put them on my 89 430 instead because it still has the USA lights. My other 4 valve 430 (91) Looks exactly like the Spyder, including the hood.
Thank you very much, I didn't know. I'm just starting to know the history of Biturbo Spyder models. Ciao
No problem! It's great to see others starting to become interested in these misunderstood variants. They definately have a better following in Europe due to Maserati pulling out of the USA right when they were getting sorted out. Not that the early cars aren't fun. If I'm not mistaken power steering was first introduced in 87 - I'll check
The Biturbo Spyder is a great car indeed. I know what I am saying: we own one since 1990 and did 95000km on it. NO engine out, just service. Show me any F car of that MY that did it. Still going strong and a nice, cultivated V6 with the right open air Feeling for the summer days of life! Just make sure you treat them gentle! What a pleasure is to see a twin car! Same colors inside and outside, same year! Congrats for you car. There are some F cars that are more reliable than you think: The 328 Serie is rock solid and almost all of them never had an engine out service. This said, the Biturbo injected is very reliable car, at least this is what everyone told me. May I ask you to seethe inspection light of your car and the owner's pouch? I miss the inspection light so I would like to know if the car had it from new and which is it. I would like to know also if the owner's ouch os dark red (vinaccia) like the one I have. Thank you very much! Ciao
Yes, not much safety electronics in these cars. It does have a welded "cage" (as we use to say here in Skandinavia) inside the car! It was about as fast as my 550 Maranello out on the highway one time we "raced"... But handling made the 550 faster anyway.
today I finally found the inspection light: here you are. Now the car is complete and doesn't miss anything ciao Image Unavailable, Please Login
I enjoy mine. It might be for sale in the spring as I need to fund a few other Italians. My 430 is also pictured.
