Modern supercars loose badly in the looks department . The oldies date from a time when appearance mattered as much or more than 0-60 times hence the high tally of f40 and 288 at the top of the choice list. Your modern car will soon be very out of date if it isn't already.

I know this won't be a popular opinion, but as someone who generally prefers styling on older cars, having seen an F40 sitting next to a LaFerrari, I was shocked at how dated and old the F40 looked, and how remarkably poor the build quality was on what is now a seven figure car. I will agree a 288 GTO is a timeless beauty that may never look "old".

Just my two cents. This is all opinion so no one is correct or incorrect.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Personally I prefer even a 458 compared to a F40 appearance-wise, let alone an Enzo or a LaFerrari.

I believe it's down to expectations. When one drives an old car today - even in mint condition, he/she makes the inevitable comparison to modern machines. There is where the old car just falls apart dynamically. It's to be expected really, progress is relentless. That's what I have been saying all along.

One reason could be also that many people is today so addicted to electronic aid, or simply unable to extract the full ability of an older car with no aids. Many older car are so stubborn and sometimes they must be mistreated to have their best back. Do you think to test a car like a Porsche 935 and take back its 100% of the potential with just a pair of laps? If you're shy with them, you can not judge. Regarding the corner performance there is also the question of tires improvement, tires have improved their grip and structurally perfected during the years, it's not just a question of car to car.
According on what you can notice in the combination of these things, our track here is untouched from the beginning. It was made in 1974. The same Group 5 cars are lapping today 10 seconds slower that in 80's, being tested by high adility drivers, factory driver yesterday and gentleman today. ;)

"Progress" is just science. But science on it's own doesn't automatically equate to more FUN. I will have more fun on the public road in a Metro 6R4 than a LaF.

Hard to compare F40 and 458. Enzo is hideous. LAF is crazy looking though in a good way.

F50 feels big & heavy. Its tail heavy. The 355 rears causes it to tramline horribly. You have to rev the crap out of it get any power. For a non-turbocharged car its has the hugest lag ever. It doesn't have that nimbleness the F40 has, especially on turn in. Where the F40 attacks an apex with pinpoint aggression, the F50 has understeer to compensate for its rear weight. Its beautiful to look at but wasn't great to drive. I've had conversations about this with other collectors that have both cars and everyone agrees.

This is an interesting question but the problem is nobody really knows how many of the later cars there are. Most of the 288 and F40 have been nailed down but F50, Enzo, LF are largely still in the air or, in the case of LF, still in production. Even F40 # is questionable given amount of michelotto LMs/GTEs/etc, conversions from production cars, etc.

    More like (assuming same prices):
    $3.5M LF + Spider * ~600+ TBD = $2.10B +~40 FXXK * $~4M + TBD = $2.26B?
    $3.0M Enzo * ~500 = $1.50B +~38 FXX * $~4M +~70+ MC12 * $~2.5M = $1.83B?
    $2.5M F50 * ~400 = $1.00B + 3 GT * $?? = $1.02B?
    $1.1M F40 * ~1311 = $1.44B + ?? = $1.54B?
    $3.5M 288 * 284 = $0.99B + 5 Evos *$?? = $1.03B?

So it would then go more like LF, Enzo, F40, 288/F50. And that's assuming those same prices plus some ballpark plugs of my own, which are all highly debatable. IMO $3.5M is a bit too strong on the 288 which means it's likely at the bottom of the list by a pretty big margin.

For their time period 1 & 2 are the most impressive IMO. All great cars though.

Joe I think you are objectively correct on ¾ points. The last one is purely subjective. I respect it, especially as you are around these cars all the time. To my eyes, the 288 has its charms, but ultimately looks a little bit unfinished (Its the easy to see diff out the back and the part of the frame you can see on the side view). It still does look really good though!
