1988 Ferrari GTB Turbo | Bring a Trailer I knew about the 308, but not the 328. Cool car, be hard to find another. Any owners here care to comment? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
'Lots' around here in Europe/Italy. Autoscout24 has lots of them listed. It is a 2Ltr Turbo known by the additional moniker of an 'Inter-Cooler.' Sadly, just a few short years ago, they were practically a 'dime-a-dozen.' I should have bought several. Not anymore.
It's the "Turbo" for short, but technically "Turbo Intercooler", equivalent of the 328 for the Italian market. 254 hp; 308 (yes, 308...) built in GTB, and 828 in GTS; ask "AlbertoLP", he knows these very well. The engine is the two-valve, not the four-valve. Rgds
Agree with you on AlbertoLP. They were ALL 2LTR cars intended only(initially(?)) for the Italian 'Tax Market.' Supposedly the smallest displacement V8s ever made. IIRC there were 4 versions: 1) 208 GT4 (Carbed) 2) 208 GTB/S (Carbed) 3) 208 GTB/S Turbo 4) 208 GTB/S Turbo (Intercooler) (pictured) No book available at the moment to double-check. Alberto(anyone) correct me if necessary. There are 113 of these 4 varients on AutoScout24 for sale right now.
Hey, come on pal! You're in München, right? How about treating yourself with a copy of Dirk-Michael Konradt's book: "Autos, die Geschichte machten: die Ferraris 308 und 328s?"; MotorBuchVerlag, 1990" ? Rgds
So Bill Noon makes the claim on BAT that these are a whole different ballgame than the old 208 Turbos. Is that right?
Shouldn't a Moderator correct the thread title? Maybe "GTB/GTS Turbo (2.0L) with 328 coachwork"? -- ain't no such thing as a "328 factory turbo"
No, couldn't be 328. 328 is for 3200 cc engine There are 208 GTB & GTS ( look like 308 ) AND after Turbo GTB & GTS ( look like 328 )
Not really...the "208 Turbo" has the coachwork of the QV, the 2 liter two-valve engine with KKK supercharger (220 hp) WITHOUT intercooler. The "Turbo" (for short) has the coachwork of the 328, the 2 liter two-valve engine with IHI supercharger (254 hp) and intercooler (with a bulged plenum on the engine hood). Later cars had ABS available as an option, just as later 328s in Europe. Rgds
Ah - ok, now I understand what you're saying... I was getting lost in the grammar and not seeing the point itself.
Agreed with Nerofer but yes Alberto_LP is the man on GTS/GTB Turbos ! Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
For sure Alberto_LP is the man to ask, but being a proud owner of an '86 GTB turbo I can say that I never have seen this colour grey/bleu with bleu interior on this already rare car.
Jim Glickenhaus - the Ferrari P4/5 owner in NYC imported a red "328 bodied" turbo from the late 80's. So check his threads. I think they are definitely cool versions. None of the cars are particularly fast by today's standards, so the special NACA duct body and rarity are the +1. Robb
I wrote many times about that model. Here in Italy is known as the "208 turbo intercooler". Abroad it's usually known as "the 328 turbo", because it's exactly a 328 with a 2 liter V8 (the 308 i one, two valves, with just smaller pistons) turbocharged and intercooled engine. Officially it was called "GTB turbo" and "GTS turbo". As I wrote many times, this very rare and great car has the best engine ever installed on the 308 series, with a fantastic intake and exhaust sound. Rock solid as the 328 (despite the turbocharger), it's a must to have, due to its rarity and power. Yes, big power, but just if compared to 1986 standards, of course. It's amazing and even incredible how fast it goes from 100 to 200 km/h in 5th gear. It has one single IHI watercooled turbocharger with a Behr air to air intercooler I would suggest to prefer the GTB turbo version (just 308 produced) but the GTS turbo (828 produced) is a fantastic car too. This said, I prefer the early 208 turbo without intercooler: less perfect, less fast but more exotic and the first Ferrari turbocharged engine ever on a street car. Coming back to this one, that GTB turbo in that color is very rare: I don't know how how many there are in that color, but no more than some (5? 10?). If it has the ABS, just 44 GTB turbo ABS were built. So, resuming for who doesn't know at all this model in the opening post: it's rare, fast and reliable, and great to see due to the NACA side air intakes. There aren't books about it, I'm writing one, but I haven't enough time to go on and complete it: who knows when it will be ready ciao Edit What to check before buying one (just the specific points for the engine, for other points it's just a 328 so check what you would check on a 328): -head gaskets (no leaks) -Intercooler integrity (no welding points on it) -exhaust manifolds, expecially the two banks connecting one, before the turbocharger (no holes) -No flashing boost gauge light when pushing
it doesn't look bad in red too... (one of the 44 GTB turbo ABS ever built shown) ciao Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
No. Not in Munich. Way tooooo big. 2.5 hrs north. Near Weiden. North of Regensberg. I am not 'in the scene' here in Germany so 99% of what I learn I learn on this board. Learned most(almost all) I know of the '208' propelled cars from Alberto. Thanx for the book suggestion. Never heard of it before.
Pretty neat! Kind of -reverse- flow as far as air to air intercooler cores are concerned. Where do the air ducts for the intercooler attach, the door or lower scoops?
they come from the two NACA air intakes, the lower scoops, designed to feed the intercooler. Door air intakes are exactly like the 328 (on left the oil cooler, on thr right the engine air filter) ciao
The best looking color was the blue medium with tan interior that Emilio sold two years ago. My red one is not for sale. Ciao
In the cheapest market for this model, that is the Italian one, we are in the 60-85 k euro range for very good cars to the excellent top ones. More or less, of course. For 70k Euro, today, you can buy a great car. That is the same price a 328 today has. Once 328 costed much more than the 208 turbo. ciao
There is actually no "market" for these outside Italy; there are a few that have been exported here and there later, but in single numbers, so not enough to make a true "market" in Europe (there is one for sale in Poland right now, for instance). https://www.classicdriver.com/de/car/ferrari/328-gtb/1989/464641 Only in Italy are the numbers sufficient to make a market.
