Yes with Paddy there and the Merc donkey they just need a top level driver, which Alonso still is of course.I assume they must have offered Alonso ,a lot less than Mclaren, and he turned them down ...either that or Frank/Claire just said no way.

Williams still has a lot of job to do before thinking about hiring an ex-champion. They already have the engine but Paddy Lowe needs cash to fix that chassis, and paying Alonso +30MM per season won´t help.

2017 results were artificially skewed by McLaren being handicapped with the Honda, and Renault being in a rebuilding phase. They will slide down to 7th in the WCC next year, maybe Paddy Lowe can help them have a chance to fight for 6th with Force India but probably not unless Stroll performs.

And the EU wonders why it's breaking up ! The EU ban on tobacco advertising is another example of treating people like monkeys, assuming they are unable to make informed decisions by themselves. In sport, tobacco sponsors have been replaced by online casinos. Result: steep incline of online gambling addiction and destitute families.

Well, the dangers of tobacco, the EU and the evilish Philip Morris probably should be left for the PR section. But the ban in tobacco sponsorship is not related to EU: FIA has banned it in all their competitions so you can´t see tobacco ads in non European races anyway. Actually any kind of tobacco ads are banned in many countries outside the EU.

Sure, although the FIA banned event tobacco sponsorship as events would not be permitted to be broadcast in Europe by EU legislation. As a non-smoker I still find it extremely nanny-state to impose one's beliefs onto others. Democratic freedom of choice is being eroded quite rapidly. Corporations and government now have most people barcoded through mobile phone usage anyway :D

Diseases caused by tobacco are a burden for every social security system so part of your taxes are wasted with those who couldn´t resist the temptation from the Marlboro men. Since tobacco advertising (and other measures) have been taken, the number of smokers have decreased. Maybe the Big Brother got it right this time.

Although others say that tobacco ads only steer smokers from one brand to another. I´ve been watching cars with tobacco ads my whole life and NEVER have smoked a single cigarette, so maybe they´re right.

Agree on brand switching influence by advertising. F1 looked at it's most striking with the tobacco logos - and Martini currently looks the best on the grid - but how long will the EU permit alcohol sponsorship ? While smoking has decreased - online gambling has increased. When we push one thing down, another pops up ! Perhaps the EU should also ban online casinos - and save thousands of families from sinking into destitution.

Well, online gambling is not (yet) a public issue of the same level as tobacco.

Online gambling addiction has worse social symptoms than tobacco. Many self imposed "victims" turn to crime to try and fund their way out of their financial sinkholes. It is more widespread than the media alludes to...but hey, it's currently legal so why shake the tree.

Help Me out here because I'm struggling to see your argument

You seem to be saying that tobacco advertising shouldn't be banned in sport because people are capable of making their own informed decisions by themselves - yes?

But then you say that the loss of tobacco advertising in sport has resulted in a sharp incline in on-line gambling, resulting in on-line gambling addiction and destitute families.

Now surely the people who get hooked on on-line gambling, are just as capable of making their own informed decisions by themselves, as those people who choose to smoke? - Or are you saying that on-line gambling is far more addictive and damaging than smoking?

    This.
We are in development of a broadcast documentary about this subject, it is quite staggering.

If the EU has social welfare at it's centre, it should also ban online gambling alongside tobacco.

I would like to say thank you for what you're doing.

I've seen how online "games" have implemented gambling, and its effects on young people and those that play. Not good at all.

As for the relevance of what the EU bans

The FIA is very much still a European entity, it is I believe required that half of the F1 races occur in Europe?(Or has that been waived and I missed it?)

This means that what the EU does, has a very strong effect on F1 directly, vs say Japan, where only one GP is affected.

Humans will have a tendency to "Go their own way" and seek out a vice of some sort. Advertising tends to direct this, rather than be the root creator.

Smoking has declined. Health costs are still highand rising. At least with smoking you die younger and never get to collect on the pension system. China seems to favor this IMHO. Lots of smoking promotion and few restrictions. Tobacco = Stimulant. Smoke hard, work hard and die off early.

Doubtful it will be a title sponsorship. I'd say it's doubtful it will even happen... Petrobras the company has a lot of brilliant people, but it has been the central point of a massive corruption scandal here in Brazil and is still a state owned company (much like Banco do Brasil, which is due its corruption investigation at some point). People will probably not enjoy to see that taxpayer money is going to sponsoring an F1 team without a Brazilian driver. Having said that the government pretty much do whatever they want with the company so.... Anyway, if that weren't enough, they have to develop fuel that will not affect the Renault engine's reliability. I'll believe it when I see it...

"Energy Drinks" are our replacement for smoking. Probably shorten life span from heart issues down the road.

And they are filling the void of advertising sponsorship in similar $$$ volume that smoking did.

Ferrari eyes 'healthy cigarette' sponsor IQOS for 2018

Ferrari could be about to announce a 'new' major sponsor for 2018. Recently, the Spanish bank Santander announced that it is leaving Ferrari and F1. The Spanish newspaper ABC now reports that the signage on the rear wing could be replaced for 2018 with a brand called IQOS.

According to 'invisible' Ferrari sponsor Philip Morris, Iqos is a high-tech technology device that heats rather than burns tobacco, releasing a 'nicotine-containing vapour' for the user. "Ferrari is finalising the agreement with Iqos about replacing the agreement with Santander," ABC claimed.

It is not clear if Iqos would contravene F1's strict ban on tobacco advertising. (GMM)

EU should also ban "energy drinks" advertising. OR, it could allow advertising of all products that are LEGAL. That would be equitable.

I wonder what the Ferrari livery would be like if Marlboro IQOS was the sponsor?
The colors of the packages of this products are blue, light blue, green, purple. How would they match these colors with the Ferrari red?
I think maybe the front and rear wings plus the halo in blue or green.

This. No legal product should be banned. If anything it should be booze. Booze and fast cars are not a good combo.
