It's so frustrating how on BMWs of this era things like leaking valve covers, fast wearing suspension pieces, leaking diffs, and replacing the entire cooling system (though I know not done here) are "normal". It just reinforces my belief that BMW is the German Alfa Romeo. Amazing driving machines but not long lasting.
Thanks for bringing us along for this work! This car is 17 years old and from the looks of the underside is no garage queen. What car of similar age and use are you comparing it to? If slow leaking valve covers and relatively cheap, easy to replace wear items are too much maybe I can interest you in a brand new Hyundai lease? I just sold my 1999 528i with 150k to a colleague for $800. It had been sitting outside for 2 years and needed some TLC (corroded rear brake line, new MAF, and it's 2nd front control arm) but with a couple hundred bucks in parts and a few afternoons elbow grease he's got a great looking, solid driving 1st car for his 16 year old daughter. Paint and interior look great. Shocks are original and she rides, steers and stops better than most American cars with 1/2 the mileage. OK the cup holders are broken, that's the one thing I can honestly say sucks on E39s. Other than that they're magnificent cars. Keep the updates coming please Bradan!
Time catches up with everything. I like how there easy to service and BMW doesn't restrict parts or service information.

Are those every fault code that was ever recorded over it's entire life? What do you do with that info? Why replace the entire rear suspension arms? great pics looking forward to many more!
Every fault in the memory since it was last cleared. We look for things like misfires to point our ignition faults, etc. The bushings on the passenger side were damaged and only offered as a full control arm. They superseded to a different style that affects the alignment so they have to be replaced in pairs to match.
