F355 Market

Bottom line is that older cars are for guys who can turn a wrench. If every little repair is outsourced, you should be driving a new one.

 

Who does belts every 3 years on a 355 at 7gs average cost.

And then there is the guy who uses his car and has an engine out ever 7 or 8 years and all is normal. Is it neglecting a car if all is required after 10k miles and 7 years is a normal engine out? I means, annual services and nuisance items dealt with in between. History on my car, purchased Nov 1995. 1st major Sept 2002. 2nd major July 2006. 3rd major April 2014. So that's 7, 4, 7. Mileage wise, 9800, 14400, 19600.

I've had my 308 for 33 years and it has had two major services, at 15k and 30k miles. Is that neglect? At the 30k I was told by the shop owner that it was one of the best running 308 he had ever worked on. I read the 308 forum and am amazed at the problems guys have. Won't start, over heats, steering racks shot,.... don't understand. I get in my 308 or 355, turn the key and they but start and run fine. Frankly I look at it this way. Every major service is a chance for some tech to screw something up. Form reading this forum that certainly seems to happen more often than it should.

 

Ha ha likely has some facts to it and I do not believe it would be much better today.

 

So because I don’t turn wrenches then the 355 isn’t for me? Right...

Point is that these people complaining about maintenance costs and purportedly “scaring people away” are mostly in the don’t work on cars group. My 355, which I work on myself, has cost me very little. I even did the headers myself.

 

And you spent how much on headers? And did they have heat shields?

 

Well, as you know Steef, I have both, and they are simply 2 different but great cars.
The 996 GT3 not needing much maintenance at all, the 355: engine out full service, but so far as reliable as the GT3...
As for emotions, there is simply no substitute for the Ferrari 355 F1-like sound, even if the GT3 feels much less fragile. Or is that just imagination...

 

No, that is not your imagination at all. I have both, and can tell you that they are different.

 

?2500? Was a while ago. Just new that was part of the deal. No heat shields. I take flexible heat shield fabric and got anything important. For the motor mounds I took a 4x4 or so square and cut a whole in the center. I removed the motor mount top nut and washer and threaded two 4x4 over it and put but and washer back on and tightened. That nut doesn’t need to be crazy tight. Moved my Kingston wires up via zip tie to that cross member tube above them

 

And wrapped the starter

I have a 1997 F355 spider 6-sp that i adore. Bought w full records and 11k miles 2 years ago. Original headers; original everything. Just a delight. Its loud, brash and ultra sexy. Dark Red. I like it more than my california. It will cost a bit. Ill have to drop 15k for a Fabspeed exhaust. I will have to upgrade the radiators and fans and an engine out in a few yrs. But i knew this going in. And its SO much more visceral and exciting than any 911, by a mile. I entertain getting a higher milage one to drive and just keep this one in a museum. Its just too beautiful to wear out.
Next will be a Barchetta.

 

Have you done research on other exhausts? 15k for a Fabspeed exhaust set up seems overkill to me. I’d say get their headers, cats and secondary bypass pipe but for a muffler go with another company.

 

Tell me you guys are joking right? He’s talking about heat shield fabric. But when he says he used a 4x4 square you guys picture a piece of wood? Lol.

 

Great another GT3+355 owner!
As my 355 is a spider, I drive it on different occasions and with different style than the GT3. So they are different, but also fill different needs.
In my opinion the GT3 gives the feel it can easily be used daily (but as mine is a CS, it is not very comfortable), where in the 355 I still am a bit cautious because of the things that can go wrong. Probably nonsense and because of reading too much stories on the forum.
But if you look at the average km/miles driven in 996 GT3's , which are in average almost 7-8 years younger, they have been used twice as much.
So general opinion on 355's , or any 2 seater Ferrari for that matter is that you should not use it that much compared to Porsches, feeding the fragility/maintenance stories, and thus hurting the values.

 

I don't drive the GT3 anymore than the F355 because there are too many cars and not enough time. I can say that they do feel different.

 

The green 95' spider with 43 K miles on it, on BaT just sold with a high bid of $62,500.
I think the last major service was late 2014, less than 2000 miles go.
Not certain what the fee would be for the buyer ?

 

I believe fee is 5% with a $5k max??? Like 99% sure it is 5%
