The April 2018 article of "Classic & Sports Car" magazine has an article about two recreations of the iconic 1961 "sharknose" F1 cars that won the World Championship with Phil Hill driving.

The 65-degree car is a complete rebuild of an earlier recreation completed in 2009 by Jan Biekens and originally painted in Belgian yellow. Some original drawings surfaced after that and were used to make completely new, hand-hammered bodywork, and Borrani made some new, original-pattern wheels.

Owner Jason Wright had acquired a 120-degree engine from the estate of Pierre Bardinon and had built another recreation. The correct carburetors were found on a 1963 Ferrari in the Schlumpf collection which were apparently not correct for that car.

The cars were painted as they would have appeared at the 1961 Italian GP, as driven by Ricardo Rodriguez and Phil Hill respectively. The photos in the article were stunning, taken on an unnamed "test track" in the rain, with the drivers wearing correct period helmets. I hope to see these cars in person some day.

Great! Thanks for posting. I thought the only one 'reconstructed 156 Sharknose was the Belgian Yellow. I've got the Octane Magazine with it's presentation. What a car!

Well, as you can see, that car is now red and has been "reconstructed" again, so it's even more accurate than before. I think any other recreations that may be built will have to be compared with these two.

And the article implies that someone might be building a contemporary 246SP sports prototype.

So, the person who built the yellow one (now red, which number from the above?) made another one with a different, more accurate engine and other stuff. Can't get better than that!

The 246SP will be epic too.

    Thank you for the info.

The one that was rebuilt from the yellow one is the 65-degree machine, the one which is now #8. The original was the car with which Gendebien finished 4th in Belgium (when the car was painted yellow, and behind his 3 teammates!) and with which Baghetti scored his surprise win in France.

(Can you imagine Ferrari finishing 1-2-3-4 at Spa? The other teams probably wondered why they even bothered showing up!)

What was the shark nose supposed to do for performance?

Carrol Shelby drove the Temple Buell 250F with the high tail [spare exhaust taped on] Harry Schell drove the other in the two photos.
In all seven 250F Maserati's were entered for the 1959 NZ Grand Prix - one did not arrive, the V12 of Scarlatti.

Scare you to move over if they appeared in your rear view mirror. :) Was probably an aero advantage having a pointy nose punch a hole in the air as opposed to a flat nose.

I think that's Baghetti's winning car at Reims.
